When He-Man and the Masters of the Universe: The Dragon Pearl of Destruction was revealed at Gamescom 2025, it marked the beginning of Mattel’s celebration of all things Masters of the Universe for 2026. Players can control He-Man, Teela, and Man-At-Arms across side-scrolling stages rendered in bright, 16-bit-style pixel art–and for the first time, fans can take up the Sword of Protection and play as She-Ra.
Being in the shadow of He-Man has led She-Ra (who celebrated her 40th anniversary last year) to have sparse appearances outside of mobile releases like Tappers of Grayskull. Her inclusion broadens the playable roster and feels like a natural fit for a co-op brawler, and even includes her sword’s ability to become other weapons and items.
Limited Run Games released new footage Thursday, showing off more pulls from deeper parts of the lore, including appearances by the elder dragon Granamyr and wicked sorceress Shokoti, suggesting the developers at Bitmap Bureau are going beyond the most obvious cartoon beats.
The story of the game plays out like a typical Saturday-morning episode: “During the Royal Festival of Light, Hover Bots attack the palace,” the official synopsis reads. “Skeletor kidnaps King Randor and Queen Marlena, and the Dragon Pearl is corrupted after the Sorceress of Grayskull is drained of her power at Castle Grayskull.”
The game arrives during a steady resurgence of retro-inspired beat-’em-ups, alongside titles such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge and G.I. Joe: Wrath of Cobra. The Masters of the Universe franchise hasn’t had much luck or taken up much space in its video game history, but The Dragon Pearl of Destruction could be the course correction that gets new fans on board right before the new live-action movie comes out in June.
He-Man and the Masters of the Universe: The Dragon Pearl of Destruction arrives on April 28–MOTU Day–for PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
