New LEGO Batman Game Will Be Missing a Major Feature at Launch

New LEGO Batman Game Will Be Missing a Major Feature at Launch

TT Games’ latest LEGO title, LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, will be released without any form of online co-op. The first TT Games-developed LEGO title in four years, LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is the fourth main entry in the studio’s LEGO Batman franchise, and it’s the first time the LEGO video game lineup will return to the DC Universe since 2018’s LEGO DC Super-Villains. It will also be the first TT Games LEGO title to utilize Unreal Engine 5, as the studio’s decision to use an in-house, proprietary engine on 2022’s LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga proved controversial within the company.

LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight looks to be a major switch-up for the LEGO video game series, as players will get to control just seven different characters from the Batman universe, as opposed to the hundreds of playable characters featured in past installments. The game’s combat also appears to be inspired by publisher WB Games’ flagship Batman video game franchise, the Batman: Arkham series, mirroring the iconic free-flowing battle system of Rocksteady’s titles in a more kid-friendly form. Featuring character designs and costumes based directly on previous comics and adaptations, LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight promises to be a love letter to everything the Batman brand represents.

LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight Forgoes Online Co-Op

WB Games released a support FAQ for LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, which confirmed that the new game will not feature any online co-op gameplay. While it will feature local co-op just as any other LEGO game has, TT Games will stick to tradition by excluding online play altogether. Thus, gamers looking to enjoy this new LEGO Batman game with a friend or family member will have to ensure they can play alongside each other in a couch co-op setting.

It appears LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight will almost entirely forgo the need for online connectivity, as the FAQ mentions that players will not need to have an Internet connection to play the game, nor will they need an online membership such as Xbox Game Pass, PlayStation Plus, or Nintendo Switch Online. Furthermore, the FAQ confirms that this new release will not feature any microtransactions, meaning players of all ages will be able to enjoy Batman’s new adventure without needing to pay any extra real-world currency. The FAQ does, however, state that players will need to connect to the Internet to download future updates.

Lego Batman Legacy of the Dark Knight announced at Gamescom 2025

TT Games’ refusal to add online co-op to LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is not very surprising on the surface. After all, none of the developers’ previous LEGO games featured online co-op play, and much of the franchise’s multiplayer appeal has been centered around couch co-op gameplay. What’s more, considering that LEGO games usually appeal to a younger audience, TT Games likely prefers to emphasize safety among its players.

Still, it’s particularly disappointing to see this LEGO title not feature online co-op gameplay. Considering that this will be an open-world LEGO Batman game, and thus be a bit longer and deeper than the typical LEGO adventure, adding an online co-op option would help ensure that gamers could enjoy it at their convenience, without consistently needing to plan around in-person sessions with friends and family. LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight will treat Batman fans of all ages to a gripping adventure, and considering that the new title looks to switch things up for the series, an online option would be an exciting step for the franchise’s continued growth.
