Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era, a new entry in the classic strategy RPG series, has been blowing up on Steam recently. The game recently released into Early Access on Steam and has quickly made its way up the top sellers chart. With a retro feel, new mechanics, and the option for multiplayer PvP, Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era offers a ton for both nostalgic fans and series newcomers to enjoy.

The Heroes of Might and Magic series dates all the way back to 1995, when the first entry was released for DOS, later coming to Windows PCs in 1996. A staple of 90s computer gaming, Heroes of Might and Magic featured turn-based strategy gameplay, where players could control armies of mythical creatures through fantasy-inspired battles. Prior to Olden Era, the most recent entry in the series was Heroes of Might and Magic 7, published by Ubisoft over a decade ago in 2015.

Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era Climbs to the Top of Steam’s Best Seller Charts

Developer Team Unfrozen recently shared on the Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era Steam community page that the game has sold over 500,000 copies in just 72 hours. The game is also sitting at number two on Steam’s Top Sellers chart, just behind the free-to-play Counter-Strike 2. This is quite an impressive feat, considering it’s above other major games like Windrose and Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred, as well as the upcoming Forza Horizon 6.

In the same message, Team Unfrozen also shared that the game has seen over 6000 reviews, 25,000 members of the game’s official Discord, and a peak concurrent player count of over 60,000. These numbers are pretty impressive for a game still in Early Access, but the “Very Positive” Steam user rating is a testament to just how many players are enjoying the game. The developer has also been actively releasing updates and bug fixes in the wake of the game’s Early Access launch, showing a dedication to the game and its players that will likely help maintain its popularity.

As the first new entry in the Heroes of Might and Magic franchise in over a decade, Olden Era has recaptured many features that made the original 90s entries so beloved. The game lets players explore a variety of maps, both hand-crafted and procedurally generated, engage in strategic turn-based battles in its non-linear single-player campaign, or take to the game’s PvP multiplayer and battle other players across different game modes. Beyond its strategic battles, Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era also allows players to align with one of six factions and build up or conquer cities while recruiting new heroes to improve their army and generate economic resources for their faction.

This blend of tactical RPG and grand strategy games makes it clear why Olden Era is a stand-out for fans of the genre, but the nostalgia behind the classic Heroes of Might and Magic franchise has likely also contributed to its Steam success. Other games like Heroes of Might and Magic have attempted to follow the same formula that made the franchise so beloved, such as Songs of Conquest. However, now that fans have their hands on a brand-new entry in the series, they are showing up to support the franchise on Steam after a decade-long wait.
