While it was only just revealed during PlayStation’s State of Play in June 2026, it has now been disclosed that God of War Laufey has been planned for almost ten years, dating back to when Ragnarok was in production. God of War Laufey departs from Kratos and Artreus’s main story, now focusing on Kratos’s late wife, Laufey, as she navigates the Everywhen afterlife.

Sony Santa Monica has finally revealed God of War Laufey, the long-rumored project that Cory Barlog has been involved in since 2018’s original God of War. As the next installment in the franchise, Laufey seemingly brings in more gods from different pantheons into the Everywhen afterlife as the main character faces a new reality following her death. While it may seem to some that God of War Laufey is a spin-off of the main series as Sony Santa Monica prepares for the next chapter in Kratos’s story, it appears that Laufey has always been the plan.

God of War Laufey Is a Second Chance to Pay Off Hidden Secret in the 2018 Game

God of War 2018 ends with a bombshell revelation that impacts the story of Ragnarok, but could truly pay off in God of War Laufey.

God of War Laufey Was Always the Plan after the 2018 Reboot

In a recent interview with CGM, God of War Laufey star Deborah Ann Woll stated that the upcoming game has been in the works since 2018, and was seemingly the plan for the franchise all along. God of War director Cory Barlog originally brought in Woll to discuss Ragnarok when it was in early production, but the Daredevil star ended up being pitched God of War Laufey after noticing a poster featuring the titular main character and Cube in the office. Woll goes on to state that the Cube has been there since the beginning and is “deeply part of the lore.” While God of War Laufey may have been pitched to Woll in 2018, it’s likely that the game was planned internally well before then.

The change from Kratos to Laufey has certainly sparked controversy among God of War fans. Many believe that the God of War franchise should focus specifically on Kratos, as the whole point of the original games and the reboot was his struggle to become a god and the consequences thereof. Deborah Ann Woll, however, believes that this is an expansion of the God of War lore and mythology, answering lingering questions following Ragnarok and deepening the established story. Moreover, when it comes to being the main character of God of War Laufey, Woll states, “We need as much diversity as possible within these stories so that we can tell even more stories…This is all just about enjoying each other’s perspectives and widening our experiences.”

God of War Laufey, Explained Who Is Faye

Woll’s comments and revelations about God of War Laufey certainly align with what had long been rumored. Ever since the original God of War in 2018, rumors had been circulating that game director Cory Barlog would be focusing on another project and stepping back from Ragnarok somewhat as he plans out his next game. It turns out that almost a decade later, God of War Laufey would be what Barlog was focusing all his attention on. God of War Laufey still doesn’t have a release date, but given its development time, hopefully, it will come soon.

The big question about Laufey’s chapter in the franchise is how it will impact the story and lore, and given that this game was always the plan, God of War Laufey might have huge implications for the series. For example, Woll states that the Cube is a significant part of the lore and has always been there, meaning it could potentially be a god or deity from Kratos’s past, or could even be something that players will go back to the God of War reboot or Ragnarok to try and find, if it truly has always been there. Whatever the future of God of War holds, Laufey might be the key.
