35 years after its initial release, Sonic The Hedgehog has been confirmed to receive an official re-release on Sega Genesis consoles. Sonic played a significant role in popularizing the Sega Genesis in the 90s and has been a critical IP for the Japanese company, serving as its widely recognized mascot. But the blue hedgehog’s saga started with the exact same games that are now getting a brand-new release in 2026.
New games coming to the Sega Genesis are rare enough to pique some gamers’ curiosity. But an actual, high-quality, official cartridge for an iconic 2D platformer like Sonic the Hedgehog is so significant that it might make gamers who don’t even own the Sega Genesis console reach for their wallets.
Two Sonic Games Are Being Re-released on the Sega Genesis
Celebrating Sonic‘s 35th anniversary, iam8bit has partnered with Sega to revive the first two installments of the franchise with brand-new special cartridge releases. The Sonic The Hedgehog 1 & 2 cartridges will be compatible with NTSC Sega Genesis consoles, and each will cost $99.99 USD, with pre-orders currently open at iam8bit. The publisher plans to ship the first wave of orders in Q3 2026, with shipments continuing through 2027.

Both games will come with special physical goodies that fans of retro Sonic games will likely appreciate. According to iam8bit, each bundle features a “full-color, premium instruction booklet with restored artwork and all-new foreword.” Fans can also expect to receive retro pack-in surprises. Beyond these goodies, the upcoming re-release comes with some rare editions that only the luckiest fans will receive. Iam8bit says, “1 in 8 cartridges have been infused with genuine, bona-fide Chaos Emerald energy. These special cartridges will feature a unique translucent exterior, housing a Chaos Emerald inner glow.”

Interestingly, Sonic The Hedgehog‘s re-release isn’t the only good news for fans of classic platformers. Another game called Mr. Nutz is also receiving a brand-new Sega Genesis cartridge release in 2027. While that game is not nearly as famous as Sega’s Sonic, it still played an important role in the history of side-scrolling platformers and deserves to be preserved.
Sonic The Hedgehog is considered by many to be one of the most revolutionary platformer games of all time. It was with this blue critter that many gamers got into the genre and continued to love and enjoy it on current-gen consoles. The current special re-release is definitely a good chance for fans to grab a piece of history and carry it with them, especially now that the gaming industry is shifting toward an all-digital future. That said, fans should note that iam8bit will only be able to ship a limited quantity of cartridges in 2026, and those who want to get their hands on the games as soon as possible might want to pre-order now.
