Ordinary Oddness is an upcoming open-world RPG that has released its first gameplay trailer and opened wishlists on Steam and the Epic Games Store as of October 21. The game has quickly made headlines for its AAA-level visuals and unique universe filled with strange creatures and anomalies. Developer Cosmicpup Studio has yet to announce a release date, but Ordinary Oddness is confirmed to launch on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, as well as on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
The story of Ordinary Oddness takes place in a fantasy city called Elysian Skies, where humans live alongside creatures known as Mythoids. According to the developer, Mythoids are “sentient beings that take decidedly nonhuman forms.” The game’s first trailer showcases many of these Mythoids, including anthropomorphic animals and robots, reinforcing its motto: normal is the strangest myth.
Ordinary Oddness Looks Like a Beautiful Fever Dream
- Genre: Open-world, ARPG, MMO
- Developer: Cosmicpup Studio
- Platforms: PC (Steam, Epic Games Store), PS5, Xbox Series X/S, WeGame
- Release Date: To be announced
Developer Cosmicpup Studio has released 22 minutes of Ordinary Oddness’ gameplay, showcasing a sequence in which the player chases another character through rapidly changing environments. The trailer also introduces some of the main characters, including the protagonist, Consulting Investigator, and a mysterious woman known as Luminar. Beyond its colorful cast, Ordinary Oddness has drawn attention for its high-end visuals, which rival those of AAA open-world games.
Ordinary Oddness’ Gameplay Loop Explained
Players take on the role of a private investigator who runs a detective agency. The gameplay loop involves accepting gigs from NPCs and solving mysteries to uncover the secrets of Elysian Skies. Completing missions rewards players with resources to expand their agency or acquire new combat skills. The developer says, “This cycle of casework and upgrades fuels the main progression.” Meanwhile, Consulting Investigator is caught up in a larger web of mysteries surrounding Luminar, which appears to be the story’s primary focus. Ordinary Oddness also describes itself as a life simulation game, suggesting more side activities may be revealed later.
How Combat Works in Ordinary Oddness
If the gameplay trailer is anything to go by, combat in Ordinary Oddness seems to have a lot in common with some gacha games like Genshin Impact. According to developer Cosmicpup Studio, “Combat relies on fast character swaps, letting players string together elemental skills, pull off tag attacks, and take cover on the fly to beat tough enemies.” Parries, perfect dodges, and cinematic finishers are also set to play a major role in battles.
Given the game’s scale and visuals, Ordinary Oddness may still be a long way from release. However, this is only speculation, and players can wishlist the game on PC storefronts to follow its development. Cosmicpup Studio has also opened pre-registration for Ordinary Oddness on its official website and will likely share more details about this upcoming open-world game in the coming months.
Ordinary Oddness is listed as a co-op and MMO game on Steam, but developer Cosmicpup Studio has yet to discuss its multiplayer features.
