3D platformer Reytrieve Odyssey on Steam appears to be a mixture of everything that made A Hat in Time and Sonic Frontiers good games. Reytrieve Odyssey currently has no release date on Steam, but it has showcased its gameplay in multiple trailers that seems to have evoked both nostalgia and excitement among fans of the genre.
The developer behind Reytrieve Odyssey is Egor Poskriakov, a solo developer who also works as an environment concept artist. On Twitter, Poskriakov was asked about the inspirations behind their indie game. And they replied, “I guess A Hat in Time. Mario and Sonic, and… NieR.”
Reytrieve Odyssey Features
- Open-world map
- Collect-a-thon gameplay loop
- Unlockable new abilities that change gameplay
- Hidden areas to explore
- Secret items to collect
- Lite combat and enemy encounters
- Cozy vibes and cute 3D visuals
Reytrieve Odyssey Looks Like a Spiritual Successor to A Hat in Time
As an open-world 3D platformer, Reytrieve Odyssey shares several similarities with A Hat in Time, with the most noticeable ones involving the story, setting, and gameplay mechanics. In Reytrieve Odyssey, players take on the role of a cute robot girl who must search an island for data discs to recover her memories. This is similar to how the little girl protagonist in A Hat in Time must collect Time Pieces across its different worlds.
Gameplay-wise, Reytrieve Odyssey also borrows one of A Hat in Time‘s core features: ability-altering accessories. In A Hat in Time, the Hat Kid can gain new powers and skills by wearing different headpieces. In Reytrieve Odyssey, protagonist Rey has a similar ability and can gain new skills by equipping different cartridges. For instance, one cartridge allows her to walk on otherwise semi-invisible platforms, a feature also present in A Hat in Time.
The trailers also show other forms of transportation, including teleporting to different zones, using a grapple hook to reach different areas, and even riding boats.
Reytrieve Odyssey Has Sonic Frontiers’ Movement and Freedom
A quick look at the protagonist’s dash in Reytrieve Odyssey could remind fans of Sonic the Hedgehog. However, the game also offers other movement options, such as sliding on rails, which is reminiscent of Grind Rails in Sonic the Hedgehog games. The trailers also show other forms of transportation, including teleporting to different zones, using a grapple hook to reach different areas, and even riding boats. It appears that Reytrieve Odyssey wants to offer the same level of freedom and stage variety seen in Sonic Frontiers when it comes to exploration, with the game’s official description saying, “Freely explore a vast and vibrant world at your own pace.”
The response from gamers to Reytrieve Odyssey seems to have been quite positive. While it doesn’t even have a release date yet, the game’s trailers and developer Poskriakov’s social media posts often see fans of 3D platforming games saying they’d love to try it out. Interestingly, Reytrieve Odyssey isn’t the only upcoming Steam game that seems inspired by classic genre hits. There is also Scratch the Cat, which apparently blends Spyro with Crash Bandicoot. Another example is Pizzapocalypse 2, which has been dubbed a Super Mario Odyssey game with pizzas instead of Cappy.
