Pokemon fans looking for something to keep them occupied until Winds and Waves releases next year have some fantastic options for fan games to play in the meantime. An upcoming Pokemon fan game aims to challenge players with a complete new approach to the official franchise games, taking heavy inspiration from the Etrian Odyssey series. Pokemon Odyssey 2 has a demo out now, so fans looking for a more difficult experience along with a massive batch of regional variants shouldn’t sleep on it.
Pokemon doesn’t have a major new mainline game releasing until Late 2027 when Pokemon Winds and Waves officially release. Aside from the starter Pokemon Browt, Pombon, and Geqcua, very few new Pokemon from Winds and Waves have been shared, so fans might be itching for more new Pokemon content during the wait for Gen 10. However, there is no shortage of Pokemon fan games to take players on adventures in all types of locations, such as a Pokemon region based on Ancient Greece.
Pokemon Odyssey 2 Has 300 Regional Variants Based on the Etrian Odyssey Franchise
As a follow-up to the first Pokemon Odyssey fan game, Pokemon Odyssey 2 expands on the concept of a Pokemon and Etrian Odyssey crossover with a story-driven adventure across the region of Lemuria. Developer Paco_Scarso recently released the demo for Pokemon Odyssey 2, so players can experience some of this fan games unique features:
- New region and story
- 300 regional variants based on Etrian Odyssey characters
- Custom type: Aether
- Choose between 8 classes
- Double Battle focus
- Brand-new soundtrack
- Difficulty settings
Unlike the traditional Pokemon Gyms that the mainline games outside of Sun and Moon feature, Pokemon Odyssey 2‘s major battles come from natural story moments. This change in formula is ideal for fans looking for a game that breaks the traditional Pokemon series formula, adding a new layer of strategy for players by forcing them to participate in Double Battles for each encounter. The new Aether Type, which is super effective against the Fairy Type while being weak to Poison and Dark, also requires players to think strategically about battles.
Some of the new Pokemon Regional Variants included in Pokemon Odyssey 2 are a Grass/Flying variant of Decidueye, a Fire/Fairy version of Delphox, and a Water/Electric-Type Empoleon. Arbok, Dusknoir, Marowak, and Lucario are some of the Pokemon who gain the Aether Type in their regional form. Some critters even have unique regional evolutions in Pokemon Odyssey 2.
A core mechanic that differentiates this game from other Pokemon fan games is the ability for players to choose between eight different classes to play as, each with its own unique starter pair, passive perk, and exclusive items. These classes include: Medic, Survivalist, Protector, Pugilist, Ninja, Gunner, Alchemist, and Sovereign based on some of the iconic classes from throughout the Etrian Odyssey series. Pokemon and Etrian Odyssey fans looking for an interesting crossover can embark on Pokemon Odyssey 2‘s Great Lemurian Race, a grand competition where the winner earns an audience with the Overlord of the World Tree, who will grant whatever wish they desire, making an ideal distraction until the next official Pokemon game is released.
