New Port Of NFS Underground 2 Turns The Beloved PS2 Racer Into A Wild MMO

It’s a day ending in the letter “Y,” so you know what that means? Yup, another classic video game has been ported in some oddball way with the assistance of AI coding. This time around, someone has gotten PlayStation 2 classic Need for Speed: Underground 2 playable via a web browser, and in this version, you can race alongside dozens of other people at the same time.

Need for Speed: Underground 2 was released back in 2004 and became one of the most popular games of the year thanks to its open-world design and Fast and Furious-like nighttime racing action. It’s like a proto-Forza Horizon, but with a lot more underglow and NOS. And now, thanks to NFS Underground 2 Revived, if you have nostalgic memories of Underground 2 and want to once again drift around its city streets, you can do so in your web browser without having to download a single file or install anything. Oh, and if you want, you can now relive your nostalgia alongside some of the thousands of players currently enjoying this Underground 2 port, according to the site’s data. Just be prepared for some chaos.

NFSU2 Revived was released late last month, but has recently blown up as fans have discovered the free-to-play browser port via viral clips of the dozens of player-controlled cars smashing into each other on streets that were never designed for this kind of online multiplayer mayhem.  Don’t worry, you don’t have to race with others if you just want to enjoy the original solo experience of NSFU2 on your PC in 2026. The multiplayer chaos is opt-in.

The person behind this port claims that they used to play Underground 2 when they were younger, and the creator put this project together so they could “play together again.”

“It worked surprisingly well, and it got a bit out of hand,” said the fan modder and developer. “It’s great to see so many people playing it.”

And as mentioned up top, yes, this port was developed with the help of AI tools, as documented on the Revived’s GitHub page. While I’m not a fan of the AI enshittifcation of the world, it’s also getting harder and harder to play or report on cool game projects and retro mods, like Revived, without running into some amount of AI coding. I’ve talked to numerous devs, big and small, working on these kinds of projects, and for many, these tools are just part of their workflow now.

Now we wait to see if EA, the original publisher of Underground 2, steps in and shuts this all down. Though the company does seem a bit busy right now…
