New PS5 Horror Game Looks Like Anime Resident Evil

New PS5 Horror Game Looks Like Anime Resident Evil

Signal Veil is an upcoming PS5 survival horror game that mixes old-school resource management and psychological thrills with a striking anime-inspired presentation. PS5 horror fans might find that its haunted-school setting and supernatural combat could give it a unique identity among the console’s upcoming releases.

Developed by Time Hunters and Serafini Productions, Signal Veil follows teenager Aki Mizuno after her mother disappears, leaving almost no trace. The only thing left behind is a cellphone with supernatural abilities, which becomes Aki’s guide as she investigates a series of disappearances at Nishikawa High School. The game’s setting ramps up the scares considerably, starting as an ordinary school that gradually changes as supernatural forces take hold. Many of Signal Veil‘s creatures seem tied to emotional trauma and buried memories, with mechanics that tie into those greater themes, making the game quite reminiscent of some of survival horror’s best narratives.

New PS5 Game Puts an Anime Spin on Old-School Survival Horror

Signal Veil makes that strange cellphone central to the game’s story and mechanics, giving a neat, modern twist on an otherwise classic-feeling game. The phone vibrates, makes unusual sounds, and displays interference when spirits or lingering memories are nearby, sometimes warning Aki of a threat before it fully appears. Fans of Silent Hill 2 might immediately see the similarities between that phone and James’ radio. However, players cannot always start attacking right away when danger is lurking. Some enemies must first be exposed with the phone’s flash, provoked into revealing themselves, or forced to show a spiritual weak point before they can be hurt, giving those encounters a Fatal Frame-like approach to combat.

Signal Veil also appears to channel the same type of claustrophobic pressure that genre greats like Resident Evil masterfully deliver. Aki has limited medicine, key items, and mystical weapons to work with, so every encounter asks players to pay attention before committing resources. While the developers have not directly cited Resident Evil as an influence, the emphasis on careful exploration, conserving supplies, and surviving a dangerous enclosed location makes its inspirations easy to see.

When it comes to visuals, Signal Veil‘s presentation goes in a very different direction from most throwback-style survival horror indies. Time Hunters and Serafini Productions wear their ’90s anime inspiration openly, but beneath that colorful, nostalgic style is an emotional stability system that can change what Aki sees around her and might make the game far grimmer than it seems. Encounters with hostile entities, traumatic events, and corrupted locations gradually wear down her mental state, eventually distorting the environment and even changing enemy behavior. The game’s developers also warn of themes of bullying, emotional distress, gore, corpses, and other disturbing material, so the nostalgic anime presentation certainly masks considerably darker subject matter.

PS5 is only one of the platforms getting Signal Veil. Serafini Productions has also announced versions for Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC, with the Steam version currently listing a surprisingly small 4GB storage requirement. No release window has been given for any platform, and both PlayStation and Steam still list the date as to be determined. For now, the mix of an anime-inspired haunted school, scarce resources, and a phone that must expose monsters before they can be fought gives Signal Veil an identity rooted in classic inspirations that goes beyond simply looking like another throwback horror game.
