New Resident Evil Requiem Update Adds Roguelike Action Mode

New Resident Evil Requiem Update Adds Roguelike Action Mode

Resident Evil Requiem‘s latest update is out now on all platforms, and besides some boring bug fixes, this free patch adds a whole new game mode to Capcom’s recently released survival horror sequel. It’s called “Leon Must Die Forever,” and it’s a replayable roguelike action-focused mode starring, you guessed it, Leon S. Kennedy and his quips.

Back in March, just a few weeks after Resident Evil Requiem launched to universal acclaim, Capcom posted a video message from Resident Evil Requiem director Koshi Nakanishi on Twitter, teasing story DLC and a new mini-game update were coming in the future. The story DLC isn’t here yet, but as promised in the video message, Resident Evil Requiem added a new mode on May 8. And as I (and many others) predicted, it’s a Mercenaries-like action mode that remixes Leon’s levels from the main game into an arcade-like experience about racking up points and unlocking upgrades.

Here’s some gameplay of the new mode courtesy of IGN:

I’ve played a bit of the new mode, and while I’m really happy to have another reason to go back and play more Resident Evil Requiem, I am a bit confused as to why Capcom left a lot of the original campaign dialogue in this mode. It feels like it could have been easily chopped and removed. It sort of makes this whole thing feel more like a very well-made fan mod instead of a new official mode. Still, any time I get to kill a ton of monsters and zombies as aging-very-gracefully Leon, I’m happy and won’t complain too much.

Resident Evil Requiem has been a massive success for Capcom, selling over six million copies since it launched in February and becoming one of the most critically acclaimed entries in the series. I’ll be curious to see if Capcom plans to support the game past its already announced story DLC. But even if that is the last big update, between the main game, this new arcade mode, and all the other extras, Requiem is going to end up being one of the best and most well-supported single-player video games released in 2026. Not bad for an aging franchise that not that many years ago seemed on the way out.
