New Resident Evil-Style Horror Game is Coming to PS5 in January

Fans of the atmospheric horror and unnerving setting of Resident Evil 7 may want to take a closer look at Apartment No 129, a creepy first-person game that transports players to an abandoned housing unit filled with mangled bodies and bloodthirsty creatures on the hunt for fresh prey. Slated to launch for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on January 16, Apartment No 129 blends handgun combat, mysterious puzzle-solving, and environmental storytelling to create a new yet familiar horror experience.

PlayStation has long been home to an impressive variety of horror games, including some of the best survival horror games of all time, with the Resident Evil, Silent Hill, and Fatal Frame franchises all getting their start on PS consoles. Xbox may be lesser known for its horror offerings, but the sheer quantity of titles made available via Xbox Game Pass has helped the Microsoft platform to find its footing within the horror sphere. Both AAA and indie horror titles have continued to delight audiences across PlayStation, Xbox, PC, and even Nintendo systems over the years, and the modern revitalization of juggernaut franchises has helped to grow the horror gaming fandom and encourage more players to check out some lesser known releases with unique premises.

Upcoming Survival Horror Game is Like Old-School Resident Evil

Fans of old-school survival horror games like Resident Evil may want to take a look at this upcoming title that offers classic horror gameplay.

Apartment No 129 is Like Resident Evil 7 Meets Steam’s Indie Horror Library

Originally launched on Steam in 2024, Apartment No 129 is finally making its way to consoles, with an official PS5 and Xbox Series launch set for January 16. Players take on the role of Emir, an independent investigator with an interest in the unexplained, as he explores the titular apartment and its greater complex to try and uncover the truth behind a devastating incident that took the lives of two young girls. Following the horrific event, which is said to be based on a true story, the residents of the building were slowly driven to madness and were forced to flee, leaving the structure desolate and said to be home to a disturbing presence. Emir’s determination to find out what really happened throws him into the midst of chaos and horror, leaving him to battle his own fears and the terrifying creatures that inhabit the not-so-abandoned apartment building.

Evoking a similar eerie sense of foreboding comparable to games like Layers of Fear while introducing an inventory system and gunplay more familiar to Resident Evil fans, the Turkish horror tale of Apartment No 129 presently sits at “Mostly Positive” reviews on Steam, though this should not deter interested fans from checking it out on PS5 or Xbox. The general consensus among reviewers is that the story in Apartment No 129 is worth diving into, though the gunplay can be a bit clunky and long notes and text must be read through fully to solve puzzles and make progress. Despite sometimes feeling like a slog to get through, Apartment No 129 offers a suspenseful horror experience with surprisingly intriguing live-action cinematics that make it worthwhile for fans of the horror genre.

A number of games coming to PS5, Xbox, and other platforms have gotten their start on Steam, which some may say is a testament to the importance of PC gaming for indie developers. Smaller games can build a presence and name for themselves by launching first on Steam and then gaining the necessary resources to provide ports to consoles, allowing even more players to try their hand at new gameplay, stories, and more. Apartment No 129 has already found moderate success on Steam and is readying to make the big leap to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S in January, serving as another example of an indie horror game starting small but managing to branch out.
