Recent years have seen a massive surge in the number of video games receiving live-action adaptations, yet Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil movie is a rare case of a film reimagining getting a game adaptation, courtesy of a new fan project. The latest Resident Evil silver screen release has already proven itself at the box office, surpassing $361 million globally at the time of writing, and the positive reception among audiences has quickly led to one franchise fan getting an early start on turning Cregger’s original story into its own Resident Evil game.
The Resident Evil game series is no stranger to movie adaptations. Paul W. S. Anderson’s first Resident Evil movie in 2002, starring Milla Jovovich, kicked off a six-film franchise that would run all the way through the release of Resident Evil: The Final Chapter in 2016. While the films received mixed reactions among cinemagoers and gamers, Anderson’s movies grossed a combined $1.2 billion worldwide. When horror filmmaker Zach Cregger announced that he too would be making a live-action Resident Evil movie, players were tentatively optimistic. Now, over a month since Cregger’s Resident Evil movie first released in theaters, one fan is showing their appreciation for the new take on the Raccoon City incident with a game adaptation of the Cregger film.
Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil Movie is Getting a Game Adaptation
Solo game developer Julian Zamora shared a first look at the gameplay of their fan project, Resident Evil: The Movie The Game. The brief teaser shows protagonist Bryan running away from an infected dog while attempting to hide in a barn. Bryan can be seen pulling out a gun and firing the weapon, though it appears to require a developer pause of the active environment to achieve this portion of the gameplay. In addition to the obvious PS1-style graphics, Zamora’s gameplay snippet also showcases the iconic fixed camera angles that were synonymous with horror games in the 90s. Zamora has stated that they are working in Godot to develop Resident Evil: The Movie The Game, and they are presently working on achieving the pre-rendered backgrounds that were present in the original Resident Evil games.
Early community reactions have voiced overwhelming support for Julian Zamora’s game adaptation of Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil movie, with many appreciating the use of fixed camera angles, which have been notably absent from more recent Capcom releases. Some did voice concern about potential licensing issues with the film’s production and distribution companies, including Sony Pictures, but others remain hopeful that the project will be allowed to continue development and eventually make its way into the hands of players.
Zamora is surprisingly not the first to introduce Cregger’s story into the world of video games. Another fan made a mod for the Resident Evil 2 remake that introduces Bryan as a playable character skin for Leon. Of course, Zamora’s project is much larger in scope, aiming to fully adapt the entire film into a complete fan game. It remains to be how long it will take Zamora to complete the game, assuming there will be no legal hurdles, so interested players may want to keep an eye out for any future updates on Resident Evil: The Movie The Game and other Resident Evil community creations.
