Happy Wheels has finally made its way to Steam, and it’s already made quite an impact. Just prior to launch, Happy Wheels creator Jim Bonacci confirmed that the physics-based sandbox game had reached over 750,000 Steam wishlists, and now it’s out, it’s being met with a very warm reception.
A browser game originally released in 2010, Happy Wheels became a phenomenon in high school IT rooms around the world, thanks in no small part to its unhinged user-generated content, its hilarious physics systems, and its abundance of cartoony gore. Happy Wheels was later ported to iOS in 2015 and then Android in 2020, and as of September 21, 2026, Happy Wheels is finally available as a standalone release on Windows and Linux.
Happy Wheels Has Arrived on Steam with an Overwhelmingly Positive User Score
16 years after its original browser launch, Happy Wheels has finally arrived on Steam. In a post on Happy Wheels‘ Steam community page on September 21, creator and lead developer Jim Bonacci joked that he only expected around 5,000 wishlists for the Steam version of his now relatively old sandbox side-scroller. Naturally, he was quite taken aback when Happy Wheels received over 750,000 wishlists in the two weeks between its announcement and launch on Steam.

At the time of writing (six days after launch), Happy Wheels is sitting at an ‘Overwhelmingly Positive’ user score on Steam, based on 2,012 English language reviews. While many of the top Happy Wheels user reviews contain inside jokes from long-time fans, there are still plenty of reviews that actually detail their experience with the Steam release of the game. One blunt but effective Steam review reads:
“It’s still Happy Wheels. It’s all there, everything you remember and more. It’s $5, no ads. This is the game that made me fall in love with physics sandboxes and it’s still great.”
While Happy Wheels on Steam is indeed largely the same game that fans have been playing for 16 years now, there are some new features exclusive to this version. As the above review mentioned, Happy Wheels‘ $5 entrance fee means that there are no ads in-game. A level browser date-select feature has been implemented in this Steam version of Happy Wheels, as have Steam Achievements, controller support, and the ability to download levels to play them offline.
Happy Wheels has already received two post-launch updates in the week since its launch, and according to Bonacci’s September 21 community post, there are plenty more to come. Though Happy Wheels is currently ‘Playable’ on Steam Deck, Bonacci has stated that full Steam Deck support is coming in the future, as is full offline support and additional controller refinements. Plenty of bug fixes will also be rolled out in future Happy Wheels updates.
