The Nintendo Switch 2 is rumored to be getting a brand-new Star Fox game in 2026, and one insider believes that it will have a heavy narrative focus. Star Fox has never been a series that emphasized writing or narrative, with the controversial Star Fox Adventures being the most robust entry in the series from a narrative perspective. However, if this new leaked detail about the rumored 2026 entry is true, fans could see their favorite Star Fox characters in a completely different light.
Fans of Nintendo’s classic on-rails shooter series have been waiting quite a while for a new entry. The last mainline Star Fox game, Star Fox Zero, was released on the Wii U back in 2016. Additionally, the franchise saw the unreleased 1995 SNES sequel Star Fox 2 released in 2017 as part of the Super NES Classic Edition, meaning the most recent Star Fox content was originally developed over 30 years ago.
Star Fox 2 is also playable on the Switch via a Nintendo Switch Online subscription.

Leaked Switch 2 Star Fox Game is Allegedly “Very Funny,” Emphasizes Narrative
According to RPGSite’s Alex Donaldson on the VGC Podcast, the upcoming leaked Star Fox game for Switch 2 is supposedly very funny, which he believes means the game will have a stronger focus on its writing and narrative than past entries in the series. The Star Fox series has never been one that puts writing at the forefront, with most lines of dialogue delivered through comms between Fox, Falco, Slippy, and Peppy as they fly through levels in games like Star Fox 64. Later entries like Star Fox Assault and Star Fox Adventures featured more complex cutscenes to deliver their stories, but Star Fox Zero reverted to the limited comms dialogue cut-ins rather than full flegded cutscenes.
That’s not to say there aren’t some funny moments that were delivered through these short dialogue segments. The iconic Star Fox “do a barrel roll” line is delivered by Peppy in Star Fox 64 via a comms pop-up, and has gone on to be one of the most beloved lines from the franchise. However, giving Star Fox‘s entire cast of characters a greater chance to shine and develop with a stronger emphasis on writing could allow this Switch 2 entry to usher in a new era for the Star Fox franchise.
Star Fox is already back in the spotlight even without a new game release, with Fox McCloud appearing in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie as voiced by actor Glen Powell. This cameo is already the most attention the series has received in years, but a brand-new game on the Nintendo Switch 2 would really solidify 2026 as the comeback year for Star Fox.

Nintendo has shown its willingness to reinvent classic characters and franchises with new stories and more developed writing, such as was the case with 2012’s Kid Icarus: Uprising and 2025’s Donkey Kong Bananza. With Star Fox set to enter the spotlight once again, it wouldn’t be surprising to see a fresh take on the franchise that incorporates a humorous focus on writing and narrative.
The leaked Star Fox Switch 2 game is allegedly targeting a Summer 2026 release.
