New Steam FPS Is Quietly Giving Battlefield 6’s Destruction a Different Purpose

New Steam FPS Is Quietly Giving Battlefield 6’s Destruction a Different Purpose

Battlefield has always been known for its destructible environments, and everyone who has played any of the games in the franchise at least once knows that there’s no better feeling than destroying an entire wall to achieve your goals. Maybe it’s the fact that we get to experience something that most of us will never get to do in real life that really gets us. Or maybe it’s how we use destruction as part of our strategy. In any case, there’s no reason why single-player games can’t take advantage of that feature as well.

In fact, the new Steam FPS Void/Breaker uses exactly this mechanic but gives it an unexpected twist. Void/Breaker was developed by Stubby Games as a single-player roguelite FPS with destructible environments, combat, and procedurally generated encounters, and it’s currently set to leave Steam Early Access on November 4, 2026. Although it’s true that destroying stuff is not something revolutionary on its own, combining it with roguelite mechanics definitely makes it a lot more special and interesting.

Some FPS games promised to revolutionize the genre, only to discover that their ambitious ideas were much harder to execute than expected.

Void/Breaker Brings Battlefield’s Destruction Into Single-Player Combat

Most people will probably agree that one of the best things about Battlefield 6 is that the game allows approaching every battle in an unconventional way. To give an example, instead of trying to defeat enemies while hiding behind cover, players can simply destroy the wall, open new lines of sight, or create alternative routes. In other words, environmental destruction is actually an important tactical tool in multiplayer matches, and it definitely plays a big role in outsmarting your opponents. However, unlike Battlefield 6, Void/Breaker is a single-player game, and the protagonist has to survive encounters with multiple enemies.

Players don’t just get to destroy their surroundings as part of their strategy, but they can use it as a weapon on its own and stun their opponents while collapsing structures. In other words, manipulating the environment isn’t something that just makes combat easier, as it can also be actively used against opponents. Sure, Battlefield 6 also allows players to use destruction offensively, but Void/Breaker brings the same possibilities into a single-player roguelite, which is not something we see every day.

Procedural Generation Adds Another Layer of Unpredictability

One of the biggest challenges that roguelite shooters usually run into is keeping players interested in the game even after completing dozens of runs. And that makes sense considering that most people would go crazy if they had to fight the same enemies with the same weapons more than a few times. Strategies become predictable, the environment gets boring, and it becomes easier to just go and look for another game. Adding destructible environments could make the title feel a lot more interesting without necessarily having to add new enemies or new features constantly.

In Battlefield, much of the unpredictability comes from other human players. Void/Breaker doesn’t rely on that multiplayer element, so it is actually procedural variation that helps introduce the same uncertainty. More specifically, the game can create different combat situations from one run to another. For example, players might face different combinations of enemies or challenges, although exactly how they will be generated depends on the game’s procedural generation process.

Void/Breaker Lets Players Build Around Environmental Destruction

It’s important to note that environmental destruction is not the only interesting feature of Void/Breaker, as it also has a pretty nice customization system built around weapon modules, abilities, and different upgrades. Of course, you can also experiment with different combinations, which is quite important when it comes to roguelite shooters, since the genre relies heavily on different ways to approach combat.

Void/Breaker 1.0 is scheduled to be released on November 4, 2026.

However, what’s interesting here is that the environmental interactions can also become part of the players’ builds. For example, the Sharp Debris module gives fragments of destroyed buildings or objects a chance to inflict Laceration on enemies, which means players get another source of damage. Another example would be Zeus Strike, which strikes enemies with lightning when they get hit by objects thrown using the gravity tether. Without a doubt, this just gives players all the more reasons to experiment with their equipment and surroundings at the same time.

Roguelite Shooters Have Plenty to Gain From Destructible Environments

It’s true that roguelite shooters have plenty of ways to keep players entertained, especially considering how many weapons and abilities there are to unlock, but adding more content isn’t the only way to make a title worth replaying. Void/Breaker is an interesting example of that. By introducing this combination of features, the game introduces another system that players can learn to use more effectively over time, and having another mechanic to master is certainly a welcome addition to the genre.

Sure, this doesn’t mean that every roguelite shooter has to suddenly include destructible environments to succeed, but Void/Breaker‘s strategy definitely raises an interesting question of what other ways there are to switch things up that don’t necessarily involve adding new weapons or enemies constantly. In any case, whether other roguelite shooters will eventually adopt a similar approach remains to be seen, but it’s certainly an interesting direction for the genre.
