New Steam Free-to-Keep Game for August 2026 Officially Revealed Ahead of Time

Steam‘s Free-to-Keep Promotion has confirmed another game for August 2026 via backend info on Steamdb, bringing the total number of games confirmed for the month up to two. Overall, this indicates Steam users may get fewer free games from the Promotion this month, although it is definitely possible and likely that more publishers sign up for it throughout the month.

Prior to this latest confirmation, the only Steam free-to-keep game confirmed for August 2026 was Moonlighter. No dates have been provided for it, nor the new confirmation, as is typical with the Promotion, but fans can expect these two games to be free to claim, download, and keep forever for a short period (a couple of days to a week) sometime in August. Moonlighter is a roguelike action RPG where players go adventuring to be a hero and collect loot to come back to town, manage a shop, and sell said loot.

Brand-New Free Zombie Co-Op Game Launches to Mostly Positive Reviews on Steam

A free co-op zombie game (up to 5 total players) launches on Steam and manages to achieve mostly positive reviews.

Steam’s New Free-to-Keep Game for August is Deponia

Joining Moonlighter on the list of upcoming free games on Steam is Deponia, a 2012 comedy point-and-click game from developer/publisher Daedalic Entertainment, as confirmed via Steamdb. In it, players follow Rufus, a self-centered dreamer living in a world that has become one giant garbage dump. Stuck among mountains of trash, Rufus dreams of escaping to Elysium, a floating city where the wealthy live. His chance arrives when Goal, a woman from the upper world, falls into the junkyard, leading Rufus into a bizarre journey involving mistaken identities, ridiculous schemes, and an unexpected romance. Featuring strange characters, absurd humor, and puzzle-solving inspired by classic adventure games, Deponia combines the comedy of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and Futurama with a unique sci-fi world.

Overall, Deponia sits at a 77% Mostly Positive reception on Steam after 3K user reviews, with players praising its charming art style, memorable characters, and classic point-and-click adventure design. Rufus is often highlighted as both equally frustrating and entertaining because of his ridiculous personality. Some criticism is aimed at the puzzle design, with certain solutions requiring a lot of trial and error, while others feel the humor can be hit or miss depending on personal taste. At the price of a free Steam game, of course, it’s worth finding out if that humor aligns with anyone’s taste.

It’s worth mentioning that Steamdb’s backend info is not direct confirmation from Valve, Steam, or even Daedelic Entertainment, but it is taken from changes within Steam itself. Some games go live on Steam’s Free-to-Keep Promotion without appearing on its upcoming list, that’s true enough, but every game on its upcoming list eventually makes its way to the promotion. For now, fans can rest assured that at least two games are coming in August, plus a handful more in all likelihood.

Moonlighter and Deponia are two completely different games too, showing the sheer variety often put on display by the Steam promotion. In addition to Free-to-Keep games, Steam’s Free Weekend promotions go a long way in ensuring users have plenty to play for whatever mood strikes them.
