New Steam Game From Imagine Dragons Lead Singer Sees Player Count Plummet

Night Street Games’ debut multiplayer extraction shooter Last Flag has recorded a plunge in its player count less than a month after release. Developed by brothers Mac Reynolds and Imagine Dragons vocalist Dan Reynolds, Last Flag is an action-packed take on Capture the Flag, where teams of five will work together to take down enemies and protect their flags. It’s currently available on Steam for $14.99.

There seemed to be a lot of anticipation for Last Flag as it was one of the 50 most-played demos during Steam’s Next Fest earlier this year. But after the full game launched on April 14, it reportedly peaked at only 558 players in its first few weeks. But Night Street Games’ devs weren’t fazed by it, telling publications like GamesRadar that they’re focusing more on the creative merits of developing a multiplayer shooter than player counts.

Last Flag’s Player Count Continues to Go Down

Unfortunately, Last Flag‘s player count continued to decline. SteamDB reported that the game had less than 100 active players each day. As of writing, there are only 21 people playing the game. Low player counts like this are concerning, especially for live-service games. This was what led Highguard studio Wildlight Entertainment to lay off its staff and, ultimately, shutter the game just three months after launch due to the drastic drop in player count.

Despite the significant decline in players, Last Flag still has “Mostly Positive” reviews on Steam. Many player sentiments have praised the gameplay, saying that it’s a fun hero shooter with little to no microtransactions. However, there are also a number of negative reviews and product refunds due to the low player count, which meant that people were playing with and against bots in matches, and the lack of servers. Nonetheless, Last Flag is still releasing patch updates to address various UI and gameplay issues. The game is also free to play every weekend in spring, so players can access the full game from Friday to Monday, and go up against demo and non-demo opponents.

It’s unclear what’s going wrong with Last Flag since launch. The limited servers are definitely a huge factor because this can cause the game to lag for players from unsupported regions. Another factor could be the lack of platform support since Last Flag is only available on PC for now. Night Street Games has yet to confirm if it plans to port Last Flag to other platforms, but it’s also understandable for a new multiplayer game to only be available on just one for now. After all, this is how Valorant and other similar competitive shooters have operated for the longest time before announcing a console version.

At the same time, Last Flag‘s promotion could also be contributing to the decline. Some Steam reviews have expressed their disappointment in the lack of marketing for Last Flag, noting that more people could be experiencing the game if they knew about it. For now, it seems like Night Street Games will be banking on the free weekends to hopefully get more players in the game. Only time will tell how the devs plan to engage the community to sustain a steady player count.
