New Steam Game Is Like Diablo Meets Stardew Valley

New Steam Game Is Like Diablo Meets Stardew Valley

Steam will soon be getting a brand-new game titled Emberville that combines the loot-driven combat and character building of Diablo with farming, crafting, and town restoration reminiscent of Stardew Valley. Indie studio Cygnus Cross is developing Emberville, which marks the team’s debut title.

Emberville begins with the player awakening without their memories inside the Virtomotus, a sprawling underground prison where a mysterious energy known as “kymia” has changed the environment and prevents death from being permanent. Escaping means fighting through strange biomes filled with monsters and bosses using action-focused combat built around positioning, timing, weapon combos, and a flexible class system. Players can switch between classes and carry active and passive abilities learned elsewhere into new builds, giving the game plenty of room for the sort of experimentation associated with Diablo and other loot-driven action RPGs.

Emberville Hands-on Preview: StarDiablo Valley Lives up to Its Many Promises (So Far)

Promising to be a blend of Stardew Valley and Diablo, early time spent with the upcoming action-RPG Emberville proves that this balance can be struck.

When Emberville enters Steam Early Access on October 27, its initial build will include farming, cooking, gathering, crafting, base building, equipment and skill systems, along with melee, ranged, and magic combat options. The early access launch will also include content spanning the opening through the early and middle portions of the adventure. Outside of combat, the other half of Emberville will become apparent as players rescue former residents trapped throughout the Vitromotus. Rescued residents return to the ruined town of Emberville, where interacting with them and helping rebuild the town can lead to quests, new mechanics, useful info, and rewards. Players also receive a personal Estate they can fill with buildings, furniture, plants, decorations, and crafting facilities, giving the action RPG a cozy progression loop that should feel familiar to Stardew Valley fans.

Those two sides of the game appear designed to complement one another rather than existing as completely separate mechanics. Materials gathered while exploring the Vitromotus can be transformed into weapons, potions, food, tools, and trinkets, while rescued villagers can provide new skills and useful knowledge to use out in the field. Progress also comes through exploration, rebuilding, and choices instead of combat alone. The result is an action RPG loop in which dangerous expeditions provide resources for improving life back in Emberville, while developing the town and the player’s Estate should leave them better prepared for the next journey underground.

For a debut indie action RPG, Emberville also has an incredibly star-studded voice cast. Matthew Mercer, Jennifer English, Ben Starr, Doug Cockle, Amelia Tyler, Nick Apostolides, Abubakar Salim, Elias Toufexis, Briana White, and Jane Perry are among the actors lending their voices to the game. Their previous work stretches across games like Baldur’s Gate 3, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Final Fantasy 16, Resident Evil 4, The Witcher 3, and Diablo 4. Such a large cast of celebrated voice actors could bring tons of additional personality to a game where rescuing residents, learning their stories, and rebuilding their community are major parts of progression

Cygnus Cross currently expects the game to spend roughly 12 months in early access, although community feedback could extend that timeline. The full version is planned to add more biomes, monsters, and bosses, along with expanded difficulty options, improved balance and optimization, more advanced creative tools, and Steam Workshop mod support. Cygnus Cross also says Emberville will use a one-time purchase model without microtransactions, with its standard price expected to remain unchanged after early access. Whether its dungeon crawling and cozy progression ultimately fit together as smoothly as the concept suggests remains to be seen, but Emberville has a compelling mix of combat, farming, crafting, and community building that could make it distinctive enough to stand out when it arrives on Steam in October.
