Many could agree that one of the best features of Castlevania is that exploration doesn’t end simply because players have visited every corner of an area. In fact, obtaining new abilities gives people access to places that were previously impossible to reach, and quite frankly, this makes character progression a lot more rewarding in most cases. However, it seems like the upcoming action RPG Queen’s Domain is ready to take this familiar feature even further.

The new Steam title was developed by Freshly Baked Games, and it takes place in Neasied, a mysterious island. What is more interesting, though, is that the game features a magical sword also known as Endu, and it allows players to fly across the world. By upgrading this same weapon, the distance one can travel increases. This might sound like a small addition to some people, but it could actually make a huge difference to how players approach exploration, as they might have to consider not only where they want to go, but also whether their sword has enough range to take them there.

Queen’s Domain Could Make Exploration More Dependent on Player Judgment

One of the most interesting consequences of giving players a sword that allows them to fly is that they might have to pay much closer attention to the environment before deciding to even attempt a crossing. If someone just wants to walk through an open passage, they usually just go; in this case, however, players must use their judgment to figure out whether a particular route is worth attempting. This has the potential to introduce an additional element of risk to exploration, especially if players cannot immediately tell whether a destination is within reach.

Moreover, Endu could make exploration much less dependent on finding the exact route the developers intended players to follow. Of course, this would be true only if the flight mechanic allows enough freedom, so players can approach certain locations from different directions instead of relying on predetermined paths. In any case, this could definitely make exploration feel less restrictive. Additionally, this could significantly affect the sense of scale as well; being able to fly may give the players a completely different perspective of a world designed around interconnected areas, so locations that initially appear far could turn out to be much closer than expected.

An Interconnected World Makes Traversal Abilities Much More Valuable

Of course, this connection between weapon and ability is pretty exciting on its own, but the way the world is designed is no less important. According to the developers, Queen’s Domain will take place in an interconnected, labyrinthine world full of secrets. To be fair, this is exactly the place where a weird traversal mechanic has the potential to truly shine. Maybe the flight mechanic could help people discover shortcuts they have no way of seeing from the ground. Or they could see connections between areas that initially seemed completely separate, gradually revealing how the island fits together. This could actually make exploration not only about finding brand-new areas, but also about finding connections.

Queen’s Domain is scheduled for release on October 30, 2026.

Moreover, this ability could influence level design as well, as it may give the developers more opportunities to add new and more complex routes, including vertically arranged areas that require players to really think about what to do next. Moreover, those who have played Castlevania know that sometimes all that stands between players and a new location is an ability they haven’t unlocked yet. This is often why returning to previously explored areas can be so fun. The same could be achieved in Queen’s Domain through Endu’s upgrade system, although it depends on how exactly the devs have used the mechanic. For example, if a gap is too wide to fly across early in the game, it could become manageable after layers improve the sword’s flight distance.

Maybe More Action RPGs Should Make Equipment Useful Outside Combat

To be honest, Queen’s Domain is not exactly lacking when it comes to weapon variety. The developers have officially confirmed that the game features more than 50 melee weapons and over 20 secondary throwing weapons. However, Endu’s traversal ability proves that weapons in action RPGs can distinguish themselves through more than just the way they perform against enemies. For example, developers could introduce equipment that allows players to break through hidden walls or solve environmental puzzles. The possibilities are endless, really.

This doesn’t mean that every weapon should have a secondary ability, but it would be interesting to see whether implementing more similar mechanics could make action RPGs more entertaining. And while it’s too early to say whether people will actually enjoy this mechanic in general, it definitely has potential. Hopefully, it will not make the game overly complicated, because there are plenty of such examples in the industry. In any case, giving combat equipment practical applications outside of combat is definitely an idea worth exploring.
