New Switch 2 Horror Game Proves Lethal Company’s Formula Still Has Room to Grow

It goes without saying that Lethal Company is one of the most recognizable co-op horror games ever created, and it’s easy to see why. And it’s probably not how much people love collecting scrap, but it seems like they love doing it when they are constantly in danger of getting killed in the process. However, even though this formula works pretty well for the game, there is always room for improvement, and it seems like R.E.P.O. is determined to prove that.

R.E.P.O. is expected to launch on Nintendo Switch 2 in 2027, and its premise is so ridiculous that it is probably going to work like a charm. Players have to steal valuable objects from haunted locations and transport them to safety without getting killed by monsters. However, the game uses physics-based mechanics, so objects have weight, and it can be quite difficult to move them without damaging them. This is most certainly not an entirely new concept, especially for those who are familiar with Lethal Company, but R.E.P.O.’s approach might very well be ready to take the experience to the next level.

Lethal Company Developer Releases Free-to-Play Horror Game on Steam

A new psychological horror game from a well-known solo developer is now free to play on Steam, and fans of the genre should check it out.

R.E.P.O. Turns an Ordinary Task Into a Chaotic Horror Experience

The idea of Lethal Company is for players to collect scrap from abandoned industrial moons to meet their company’s quota. This is quite a straightforward objective, but completing it is definitely not as easy as it sounds. R.E.P.O. uses a similar approach, but instead of collecting scrap, players have to move furniture and other valuable objects. To most people, this does not sound like an important difference, but it actually changes how players relate to the experience significantly.

After all, everyone has had to move furniture at least once at some point in their lives, so that frustrating feeling of carrying something heavy or fragile is familiar to a lot of people. On the other hand, not everyone has experienced wandering around abandoned facilities collecting scrap and discovering secrets. In other words, this is where R.E.P.O. has a significant advantage, because the experience is a lot more immersive due to its relatability. Of course, the fact that the entire premise of the game is so ordinary and ridiculous at the same time just makes it even easier to appreciate the humor.

Even though monsters are quite a big problem, R.E.P.O. players will have plenty of other things to worry about as well.

Moreover, what really has the potential to change the way players experience R.E.P.O. is that everything follows the laws of physics, so there is actually strategy involved when it comes to deciding how you are going to move certain objects. This is especially relevant to large items like dressers and beds or fragile objects like vases. In other words, collecting loot is not only about finding something valuable anymore. Moreover, players will have to coordinate directions when transporting objects, which adds another layer of complexity to the main objective of the horror game. It actually seems like even though the monsters are quite a big problem, players generally have a lot of other things to worry about as well.

Whether they like it or not, monsters also have to follow the laws of physics, which is a very interesting detail, especially considering that in most horror games, enemies are just treated like obstacles that players have to avoid. However, in R.E.P.O., players will be able to interact with the monsters by grabbing them, lifting them off the ground, and even throwing them into other objects. This makes the physics system an important part of combat and survival as well. This can absolutely make encounters extremely unpredictable, which in turn tends to create the most memorable parts of any gaming experience.

R.E.P.O. and Lethal Company Can Succeed Without Replacing Each Other

Generally, R.E.P.O. doesn’t seem to be reinventing co-op horror because Lethal Company has already demonstrated that collecting valuable objects while trying to survive is a pretty successful strategy. So, instead of drastically changing something that has been proven to be effective, R.E.P.O. has simply decided to build on what made it so special and entertaining in the first place. What’s even more interesting is that Lethal Company and R.E.P.O. don’t necessarily have to compete for the exact same audience either.

People who enjoy the tension of meeting quotas while trying to survive can appreciate both games, but since the two titles approach gameplay differently, there are also plenty of reasons to choose one over the other. In other words, experimenting with the same successful formula often gives co-op fans more variety without having to force them to abandon the type of experience they already enjoy.
