New Vegas RTX Available Now

Fallout: New Vegas has received a major fan-made RTX Remix overhaul that brings full path tracing, modern upscaling, and an entirely new renderer to the Mojave. As Bethesda’s upcoming remaster of Fallout: New Vegas takes shape, the original 2010 game may have just gotten one of its biggest visual upgrades yet.

Nvidia’s RTX Remix has already given modders a powerful way to modernize older PC games, adding features like path-traced lighting, physically based materials, and modern upscaling without rebuilding the games themselves. Projects like Portal with RTX and Half-Life 2 RTX have demonstrated what the technology can do, but a sprawling RPG like New Vegas presents a much bigger challenge. Modder Kim2091 reportedly spent months heavily modifying RTX Remix specifically for New Vegas, including building a custom wrapper and NVSE plugin that feed the game’s scene directly into the new renderer. Ultimately, New Vegas is the kind of sprawling, heavily modded RPG that shows just how ambitious these community remasters are starting to become.

Fallout: New Vegas Mod is a Game-Changer

A new mod for Fallout: New Vegas looks to implement a major graphical overhaul, complete with path tracing, for the iconic 15-year-old RPG.

Officially titled New Vegas RTX, developer Kim2091’s mod brings full path tracing to the Mojave, turning the sun, moon, lamps, fires, neon signs, muzzle flashes, and even the player’s Pip-Boy into real light sources. Unlike the original’s lighting system, light now bounces naturally around environments, shadows soften, and reflections can show objects outside the player’s immediate view. The overhaul also adds a physically based sky with volumetric clouds and changing weather, path-traced water with ripples and underwater caustics, parallax support for compatible texture packs, and much darker nighttime conditions. It also supports DLSS, FSR, and XeSS upscaling, along with frame-generation options.

Importantly, New Vegas RTX was also designed with the game’s enormous modding scene in mind. It supports texture and mesh replacers, and many bug-fix and engine mods should continue working alongside it. The renderer can even recognize weather types added by other mods and adjust its new sky accordingly. There are some incompatibilities fans should be aware of, particularly with competing renderers, ENB, ReShade, and other Fallout: New Vegas mods that modify the same parts of the graphics pipeline, but the project is far from a closed-off visual package. Some minor touches also do a nice job of keeping the game feeling alive, with the world continuing to render behind the Pip-Boy and other menus instead of freezing into the original sepia backdrop.

There are still some rough edges, though, as the creator describes New Vegas RTX as a work in progress rather than a finished remaster. So far, Fallout: New Vegas‘ DLC hasn’t been fully tested, some DLC weather presets still need work, and path tracing itself is demanding enough that the creator recommends using DLSS, FSR, or XeSS rather than native resolution. Several updates have already addressed crashes, disappearing terrain, AMD and Intel compatibility, UI problems, and performance, suggesting development is moving quickly after release. Anyone installing the mod today should expect to join the project at a fairly early stage, as opposed to a completely finished remaster project.

New Vegas RTX’s release is especially interesting because Bethesda has confirmed an official Fallout: New Vegas remaster is in development alongside one for Fallout 3, though it hasn’t announced release dates, platforms, or details on the extent of either upgrade. That leaves New Vegas RTX as one of the most dramatic ways to see the Mojave with modern rendering tech while preserving the original experience. If the official remaster wants to make the same visual first impression, the modding community has already raised the bar considerably.
