An upcoming PC game is already gaining attention across social media for its extreme difficulty, offering players a scenario in which each attempt at winning has only a 1-in-5-million chance. While some players are already balking at the idea of attempting such a thing, others are intrigued by the PC game concept and want to see how far the developer will take it.
Plenty of games have high difficulty levels, with Soulslike games being one example of a genre that is popular, in part, due to the extreme challenge provided. In some cases, developers have purposefully made games cruel towards the player, like in the case of the Kaizo Mario World mods that put a twist on standard Mario gameplay by making them insanely difficult to beat. In this case, though, a developer has turned one of the most iconic phrases regarding difficulty into a game concept.
New Game’s Difficulty is Like Finding a Needle in a Haystack (Literally)
A game developer going by the name of Nas has shared a demo video of the new game they’re working on that will be extraordinarily difficult to beat. According to the developer, players will only have a one-in-five-million chance of beating the game on the first try, and even those who are persistent and keep at it likely won’t finish it without spending a ton of time. The game, which is just being referred to as “a needle in a haystack game” is exactly that — a digital haybale consisting of five million pieces of hay with one needle hidden inside that players are tasked with finding. The developer has shared a brief gameplay video, in which gamers can see the concept in action as the player plucks one piece out of the pile at a time.

According to Nas, the new needle in a haystack game will be listed on Steam soon, though it’s not clear when it will actually launch. Plenty of those responding to the demonstration are already balking at the odds of winning, though some seem excited to take on the challenge and see if they can beat it. While the initial challenge is extreme, one gamer suggested that tools like shovels be integrated into the game, allowing players to gradually increase the odds for themselves, which Nas has said “is the idea.” Others have joked about simply burning the haybale down, revealing the hidden needle quickly. Others suggested that they’d be more interested if they could play the game with friends, which Nas seems to be teasing as a possibility.
Given that the new game isn’t available yet, some might be concerned about whether it will actually become a reality before getting involved. The developer has worked on at least one other game, which released in 2025, so they do have an established history. That game is Nano Neighbors, an online idle game that lets pixel art friends hang out on the player’s screen. The title has integrated Discord support, allowing real friends and conversations to be integrated into the group. The game currently holds a Mostly Positive score on PC gaming platform Steam.
For now, it is yet to be seen whether the viral interest in this extaordinarily difficult game can convert into actual players. If nothing else, one can imagine game streamers taking an interest in it, as the challenge could potentially draw in viewers, while still providing a relaxed experience that could be good for chatting with an audience at the same time. It will particularly be interesting to see if anyone is lucky enough to find the needle within the first few pulls, given the extreme odds working against gamers.
