LEGO‘s upcoming X-Files set was spotted in the wild weeks ahead of its expected release. The first leaked photo shows a set likely to stir nostalgia among fans of the hit ’90s show, while recent rumors suggest LEGO plans to pair the product with an equally nostalgic gift.
The upcoming set is based on a fan design submitted via the LEGO Ideas program in January 2025. Most submissions need 10,000 votes before the Danish toymaker will consider them, but this entry was part of an official challenge that asked builders to create nostalgic ’90s throwbacks in LEGO form. LEGO picked four of the 191 submissions in June 2025, including a set based on the original run of The X-Files, which won the grand prize. More than a year later, LEGO has yet to launch a retail set based on the winning design, although recent rumors suggest it could arrive before the end of summer 2026.

Finalized LEGO X-Files Set Sighted in Leaked Box Photo
LEGO’s X-Files set was sighted for the first time ever in early July 2026, after one seller prematurely shared a photo of its box. The image suggests the final product closely follows the original “Build Your Nostalgia: 90s Throwback” challenge concept, with a two-level build that pairs a forest UFO scene above with Mulder’s basement office below. The nostalgic set is said to be part of LEGO’s August 2026 product wave.
LEGO Made 2 Major Changes to the Original Fan-Designed ‘X-Files’ Set
The leaked product packaging indicates that LEGO’s designers made two major changes while adapting the winning fan submission for mass production. First, the final UFO is flatter and gray, rather than the original’s pyramid-like green design. Second, Mulder’s office has been scaled down, with its interior now closer to minifigure scale. For reference, the original submission featured stacked furniture that was about three minifigures tall, while the final design brings that down to about two minifigures. The change aligns with a May 2026 leak claiming LEGO’s X-Files set will include 1,478 pieces, a roughly 25% reduction compared to the original design.

The original fan design that 21369 is based on included seven minifigures: Fox Mulder, Dana Scully, Assistant Director Walter Skinner, Eugene Tooms, The Jersey Devi, Grey Alien, and Syndicate Leader. The newly leaked box suggests that The Jersey Devil and Syndicate Leader did not make the final cut. The X-Files is not the only nostalgic Ideas-line set expected to arrive on August 1, with LEGO just announcing an immensely posable E.T. set due to debut on the same date.
