One of the hottest issues among gamers today is the impending shift away from physical games entirely in favor of an all-digital future. Nintendo recently weighed in on this debate to give the company’s official stance on the issue. In light of other major gaming companies like Sony and Microsoft’s distinct approaches to the future of the gaming medium, Nintendo has good news for fans and collectors of physical games.
While Sony has gotten into hot water with fans over its plans to end physical PlayStation game production in 2028, Microsoft has taken a different approach. Xbox offers players a new disc-to-digital program that allows physical game discs to be converted to digital licenses, giving users the best of both worlds. Nintendo has only recently clarified its stance on this issue, letting fans know that plans won’t be changing going forward.

In an interview with Brazilian YouTuber Coelho no Japao, VP and general manager for Nintendo in Latin America Bill van Zyll assured fans that the company has no plans to end physical game production and distribution. Zyll also goes on to acknowledge the heavy interest that Nintendo fans have in physical media, and says that the company wants to keep the door open for both physical and digital releases to thrive on the Nintendo Switch 2. With Nintendo historically influenced by what is popular with its users, the company plans to keep releasing games physically as long as there is a market for them. As Zyll says:
“Historically, we’ve been very agnostic, right? We go off what the consumer prefers, and take that into account very heavily. We also have a platform that was just launched. We’re barely just over a year into NS2. It’s got both digital and physical – that capability. There’s no plans to ditch physical. We know how much the fans like it as well, so our position has been to be agnostic.”
Put the consoles in the correct order.
Despite Nintendo’s expressed commitment to continue physical game production, the Nintendo Switch 2 has continued its controversial game-key card releases for certain games. These Switch 2 releases come with a physical cartridge that doesn’t actually contain the game itself, but a download for the full game. The controversy from these types of release comes from the fact that players still need to access online services in order to download the game, potentially making them obsolete if these online services ever go offline.
Nintendo has also made an effort to entice users to purchase games digitally from the eShop by offering discounts on major first-party releases. Most Nintendo-published Switch and Switch 2 games can be purchased digitally for $10 less than their physical counterparts. This approach allows Nintendo fans to pick up physical games for their collection if they prefer, while giving players who don’t care about physical releases a chance to save a bit of money.
This dual-threat approach to game releases gives Nintendo the ability to remain mostly neutral when it comes to the physical vs. digital games debate. However, by continuing to offer physical releases for major upcoming games like The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake and Metroid Ravenous, Nintendo takes a stand against a digital-only future that platforms like PlayStation are headed toward. Gamers who hope to continue their physical game collection in the coming years can rest easy knowing Nintendo will still offer traditional physical game releases alongside its digital offerings.
