To set expectations, Nintendo has confirmed two details about the event ahead of the 30-minute Zelda Direct on September 8. It’s a busy time to be a Nintendo fan, that’s for sure. Not only is there a Zelda Nintendo Direct on September 8 at 7 am PT/10 am ET, but there’s also a 45-minute general Nintendo Direct on September 9 at the same time.
Of course, it’s worth mentioning that the Nintendo and Zelda game rumor mill has been off to the races. Everything from a new Star Fox game to Mario Kart World DLC and the return of Nintendogs and a new Super Smash Bros. game has leaked ahead of the event. Whether or not there’s any truth to this remains to be seen, but in the chaotic discussions building hype ahead of the event, Nintendo did make an official announcement regarding two key details for the Zelda direct (beyond the timing and length).
Nintendo Confirms 2 Details About Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct
In a follow-up tweet via the official Nintendo Japan Twitter, Nintendo first confirmed that the Zelda Direct goes “beyond games” and will also share “initiatives related to the 40th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda.” This pretty much confirms that the live-action Legend of Zelda movie will be there, but fans can and should expect physical releases like merch too. That’s a pretty exciting addition to the line-up, as well as a good way to calm expectations, i.e., it’s not 30 minutes of new Legend of Zelda games.

Secondly, Nintendo did outright confirm that it will share “details on the Nintendo Switch 2 software ‘The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.” Many expected as much given that Zelda: Ocarina of Time‘s remake is slated to release in 2026, but having confirmation is nice. Fans can reasonably expect gameplay and a release date, but exactly what is there (beyond it being there) is up in the air.
While the Zelda Direct is a big deal for fans of the franchise, it’s worth noting that Nintendo definitely has more up its sleeve since the general Direct follows Zelda. Following Zelda: Ocarina of Time is not easy for anyone, not even Nintendo. Plus, once that Direct is over, a Nintendo Treehouse live presentation is slated to take place on September 9.
It’s uncertain if the Nintendo Treehouse will feature games from both Directs, or just the general one, but it would not be surprising to see Zelda: Ocarina of Time at the event. Zelda: Ocarina of Time is one of the best games ever made, based on Metacritic reviews, so any chance to market it (alongside other games) ought to be taken.
