The current version of the Nintendo Switch 2 was released in June 2025, more than eight years after the original Switch. Multiple system bundles have been offered with different software, but Nintendo has not released any system variants since launch. The hardware has remained completely the same, which was not the case throughout the original Switch’s time on the market.
Nintendo Switch 2 will see a price increase in September, following similar hikes for systems like PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. The global RAM shortage has resulted in price increases for countless tech products, and Nintendo’s newest console is no exception. The company provided advance notice about the increase and is offering software bundles that encourage people to buy Switch 2 ahead of the change.

An OLED version of the original Switch was released in 2021, about four years after the base model’s release. Nintendo Switch 2 does not have an OLED option, and many fans were surprised by the decision when the system was first revealed to the public. Things could change in the future, though, as rumors claim that the company is exploring the possibility of an OLED Switch 2 model. ZDNET Korea has reported that discussions are happening between Nintendo and Samsung, with production of a Switch 2 OLED version potentially starting at the end of 2027.

Nintendo’s decision to avoid an OLED screen was attributed to a desire to keep the new console’s costs low. Switch 2’s launch price caused controversy, and an OLED screen would have made it even more expensive. A lot of that initial controversy has died down, particularly as the price of other gaming systems and electronic devices have increased. Offering an OLED version in 2028 would give Nintendo a chance to cater to passionate fans who don’t mind upgrading, rather than forcing early adopters to pay more money right away.
If a Nintendo Switch 2 OLED version really is in the planning stages, it’s unclear just how much the system will cost. The Switch OLED cost $349.99 in 2021, which was $50 more than the launch model of the system. It’s possible a Switch 2 OLED could also be priced at $50 more than the current system, but a lot could depend on the current RAM crisis. Video game systems used to drop in price over time, but that’s no longer the case. It’s possible the base model Switch 2 might still cost $500 in 2028, or it could even cost $600 or more.
As video game hardware becomes increasingly expensive, companies like Nintendo will have to convince fans that the price is worth it. Nintendo has largely done that with exclusive software, and the company seems to have a lot of big games on the way. A remake of Zelda: Ocarina of Time comes out later this year, and Pokemon Winds and Waves release in 2027. Those games should sell a lot more Switch 2 systems, but it remains to be seen whether there’s an appetite among fans for a more expensive model.
