Nintendo Switch 2 Exclusive Yoshi Game Locks Down Its Release Date

As the Nintendo Switch 2 prepares to celebrate one full year since its initial launch, the system has confirmed that its next exclusive first-party title, Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, will be releasing on May 21. Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is an adorable new 2D-sidescrolling adventure with the beloved green dinosaur Yoshi and will once again transport players into a visually stunning world as they explore various levels and make special discoveries along their journey. The game will join Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza as the headlining first-party exclusives for the Nintendo Switch 2, and players can now learn even more about the cute adventures ahead with a brand-new release date trailer for Yoshi and the Mysterious Book.

The Nintendo Switch 2 itself quickly became the fastest-selling video game console of all time, even surpassing the PlayStation 5, and many have attributed those sales to the popularity of Nintendo’s first-party IPs, including the Super Mario Bros. and Donkey Kong franchises. Switch 2 editions of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom have also helped to draw in fans, though some have voiced disappointment with the lack of new first-party Switch 2 exclusives, at the time of writing. Luckily, Nintendo has finally confirmed that their next Switch 2 headliner will be launching in just a few months, and audiences are already counting down the days to the next big Yoshi game release.

Yoshi and the Mysterious Book Release Date and New Trailer

May 21, 2026 (Thursday)Yoshi and the Mysterious Book will be releasing exclusively for the Nintendo Switch 2 on Thursday, May 21, just two weeks before the Switch 2 celebrates its one-year anniversary. The game begins with an unknown book, named Mr. E, arriving on the island of Yoshis and opening his pages to invite them in to explore new storybook worlds filled with unknown creatures waiting to be discovered. Yoshi can hop into these pages and explore 2D levels that will introduce unique critters for Yoshi to study and interact with. One of the new gameplay mechanics in Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is Yoshi’s ability to feed fruits and vegetables to the various creatures he encounters, with each food transforming the creatures in unexpected ways. These transformations can help Yoshi to uncover hidden areas of each level and will be scribbled down in Mr. E’s pages for further study.

Yoshi can also pick up and carry some creatures on his back, including a flower friend that makes plants grow, aiding Yoshi in his platforming. Other unique features of Yoshi and the Mysterious Book include dandelions that can “absorb” and weaken rocks, bubbles that Yoshi can float and jump through, as well as an umbrella for floating and even fishing and surfing gameplay. The game builds upon the iconic platforming that has become synonymous with the Super Mario Bros. franchise and retains many of the key features of previous Yoshi games, like being able to pick up and throw objects. Similar to games like Yoshi’s Crafted World and Yoshi’s Woolly World, Yoshi and the Mysterious Book blends stunning visuals with its intuitive gameplay for a fresh yet familiar experience.

The various Nintendo games starring Yoshi have proven to be incredibly popular over the years, so it should come as no surprise that audience hype for Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is already riding high. Of course, some fans are still keeping their fingers crossed for even more first-party games to be announced for the Nintendo Switch 2, and many are anticipating a Nintendo Direct showcase that will unveil even more exciting journeys ahead for Yoshi, Mario, and others. Yoshi and the Mysterious Book looks to kick off the one-year anniversary Switch 2 celebrations when it launches on May 21.
