The online Nintendo store is going to be getting a name rebrand at the end of the month, marking a new era for the storefront. This isn’t the first time that Nintendo has made a change to its online store, as the current name hasn’t even been around for five years.
Nintendo’s online store was rebranded as My Nintendo Store back in 2022, as it was originally intended to be part of the My Nintendo loyalty program. The My Nintendo program allowed gamers to collect Platinum Points by playing through Nintendo Switch Online or mobile games. This rebrand announcement hasn’t mentioned anything about putting an end to Platinum Points, but players can expect to see an online store with a different name in the near future.

Nintendo’s Online Store Will Get a New Name at the End of the Month
Instead of being called My Nintendo Store, the new version of the online storefront will simply be known as the Nintendo Store and will officially change over on May 27. This change has been confirmed on a variety of official Nintendo Twitter accounts, including in Japan, the UK, and the United States. Nintendo also made sure to reassure gamers that even though the name is changing, the store itself is still going to be the go-to hub for buying the best Switch 2 games. The way the online store functions is going to remain the exact same for the foreseeable future.

Nintendo hasn’t explained what inspired the company to change the online store name, but it’s most likely due to simplicity. For the most part, online feedback to the announcement has been pretty unbothered by the change. This isn’t the only change that Nintendo has implemented this month, either. The recent news about the confirmed Switch 2 price hike has continued the controversial trend of major gaming companies increasing the price of consoles. Granted, Nintendo renaming the online store isn’t nearly as big of news, but it’s yet another example of how the company has been making a variety of changes recently.
The reasoning behind the name change will probably remain a mystery. Subtle rebrands could be hinting at potential plans for an eventful summer, though. With Ocarina of Time remake rumors circulating and the confirmation that Splatoon Raiders will be coming out in July, what looks to be a simple rebrand could actually be the signal that Nintendo wants to tweak some of its image before making more announcements. This is merely speculation, but the change is definitely arriving at an interesting time, since a lot of big game reveals happen in the summer.

Nintendo’s presence in the recent news cycle has been a mixed bag. The Switch 2 cost increase and the company’s stock price falling have been low points, but there is also the confirmation of a new Star Fox remake, which has ignited plenty of excitement. A new online store name may be a small update in comparison, but it’s going to be interesting to see what the rest of the year has in store for Nintendo.
