Nioh 3 is Getting a Free Update Next Week

Fans of Nioh 3 have reason to celebrate as the latest samurai action title is set to receive a significant free update on April 27. This surprise announcement regarding Nioh 3 comes from developer Team Ninja and publisher Koei Tecmo, who are looking to keep the momentum going for their latest hit. While much of the Nioh 3 base game has already been explored by many, this upcoming patch aims to provide veteran players with new ways to test their skills and earn fresh rewards. The title has already reached a major sales milestone since its launch earlier this year. Specifically, the update will introduce challenging quests that will push even the most skilled warriors to their limits.

Nioh 3 made its debut on PlayStation 5 and PC via Steam in February 2026, quickly establishing itself as a standout entry in the challenging action-RPG genre. Developed by the veterans at Team Ninja, the game is the latest installment of a series that has collectively sold over 8 million copies worldwide. The third game broke franchise records, becoming the fastest-selling Nioh title to date by surpassing 1 million units sold shortly after its release. The series is well-known for its intricate combat systems and deep loot mechanics, often drawing comparisons to the Souls-like subgenre while maintaining its own distinct identity. Providing free content updates alongside planned expansions is a long-standing tradition for this developer to keep the community engaged well after the credits roll. This specific entry has been praised for its “Open Field” levels and highly accessible gameplay, making it a favorite for both newcomers and returning veterans.

Expanding the Nioh 3’s Sengoku Legend

With the upcoming April 27 update, the focus shifts toward gameplay expansion, most notably through the addition of multiple “Battle Scrolls.” These high-difficulty side missions allow players to revisit specific myths and engage in combat that is far more demanding than the standard campaign. Beyond the new missions, the update introduces a complex mechanic known as the Stone of Penance. According to Team Ninja, this system allows players to gamble for better gear by significantly increasing the game’s difficulty in exchange for improving the rarity and “+Values” of their accessories. This is a perfect fit for players who felt the initial experience was a bit too manageable and are looking for a way to utilize the game’s deep combat mechanics against tougher foes. Completing these new high-level Battle Scrolls will grant players access to entirely new skills, providing a tangible incentive to overcome the steepest challenges. The patch isn’t just about adding new things, as it also includes vital balance adjustments. Specifically, Team NINJA plans to enhance “certain Graces,” which are set bonuses that define many high-level player builds. While the exact details of these changes will be revealed in the official patch notes, the goal is clearly to broaden the number of viable strategies for the endgame.

In a letter shared on the game’s official website, producer Kohei Shibata expressed his deep appreciation for Nioh 3’s global player base. “We would first like to express our gratitude to the many players around the world who have taken the time to play Nioh 3 since its release,” he stated, while also confirming that the team is currently working hard on both future updates and downloadable content. This April 27 patch is just the beginning of a larger roadmap for 2026 and 2027. Following the free update, players can look forward to two major paid expansions included in the Season Pass. The first DLC, titled Hell Rising, is scheduled to launch in September 2026, followed by a second expansion known as Hell Insurrection or Bloody Insurrection in February 2027. These expansions will bring entirely new story arcs, fresh enemies, powerful bosses, and additional yokai to battle.

The narrative of Nioh 3 transports players to the chaotic Sengoku era of Japan, following the journey of Tokugawa Takechiyo. As the grandchild of the legendary Tokugawa Ieyasu, Takechiyo is destined to lead, but his path is obstructed by a treacherous conspiracy involving his own family. His younger brother, Tokugawa Kunimatsu, seeks to seize power by unleashing a terrifying wave of supernatural yokai across the land. Accompanied by the guardian spirit Kusanagi, players must navigate this violent landscape to claim Takechiyo’s rightful title as Shogun. The game features a star-studded cast of historical figures, such as Takeda Shingen, Minamoto no Yoshitsune, and Hattori Hanzo, alongside new performances by Tao Tsuchiya as Queen Himiko.
