No Man’s Sky Player Shares Idea That Could Take Base Building to the Next Level

No Man’s Sky players want to take base building to another level, asking Hello Games to incorporate customizable space stations into the interstellar survival game’s staggeringly large universe. Base building in No Man’s Sky has already come leaps and bounds from where it started nearly 10 years ago, and being able to set up their own bespoke space stations is one direction the game could be heading in the future.

When it was first released in August 2016, No Man’s Sky was widely perceived as a game with lofty aspirations that failed to deliver on its promises. While the game supported more than 18.4 quintillion planets for players to discover and explore, there wasn’t much to do on them initially. However, regular free updates over the course of the game’s lifespan have added a wide variety of content, with improved base building in No Man’s Sky being one of the development team’s first post-launch priorities, sparking one of the biggest turnaround success stories in modern gaming.

There are nearly infinite planets in No Man’s Sky to explore, and one player’s base fits perfectly into one of those worlds’ aesthetics.

No Man’s Sky Players Demand Customizable Space Stations

Nearing its 10th anniversary, No Man’s Sky‘s fan base is now requesting the ability to build similar bases throughout the universe that aren’t tied to individual planets. A recent post on Reddit by user awacate_gamerYT has gained a lot of attention with its proposal of customizable space stations, an idea that many fans of the game seem to be solidly backing. Under this particular player’s proposal, these space stations would follow several of the conventional rules of land-based base building, but they would also incorporate some features of No Man’s Sky‘s settlements, like supporting large residential NPC populations and allowing for outside ships to visit.

Players already have a multitude of options for creating custom spaces throughout the universe. One of the earliest additions meeting these criteria was the addition of No Man’s Sky‘s freighters, massive ships that support hangar bays, storage spaces, teleporters, and other amenities, and featuring interiors that are nearly as customizable as bases tethered to planets. But while freighters provide a hub that can travel between star systems, their early addition to the game means they don’t take advantage of some more modern features that have been added to No Man’s Sky.

This recent post is far from the first time that players have requested the ability to build their own custom space stations, and the frequency with which these requests appear just goes to show how in-demand space stations are as a feature. Some have speculated that demand may push them to be included in a 10th anniversary update in August, and several fans have invoked No Man’s Sky creator Sean Murray with their requests. Murray has used player feedback as a guiding force for plenty of No Man’s Sky‘s content updates in the past, and he’s likely well aware of how other players have been demanding space stations.

No Man’s Sky also seems to have found an unlikely competitor for players’ attention in Bethesda’s Starfield. While that game is much heavier on RPG elements, both share similar concepts, like exploration of numerous planets and cataloging alien life forms. No Man’s Sky‘s Voyagers update from August 2025 drew a lot of comparisons to Starfield’s custom ship-building system, letting players place modules and parts down in a grid to make their own Corvette ships with traversable, interactive interiors. Starfield‘s big Free Lanes update, which was released on April 7, also added a bunch of new features, including the claimable Asteroid Manor space station, and while it’s not fully customizable, Hello Games may want to get ahead of the competition by meeting its players’ demands for unique space stations.
