After weeks of rumors and leaks, developer Firesprite and publisher Sony revealed Until Dawn 2 at the State of Play event in June 2026, and Until Dawn 2 is interestingly similar to an upcoming release from Obsession director Curry Barker. Perhaps the connection wasn’t immediately obvious because of the weeks between news, but Obsession is currently in the zeitgeist, with its theatrical release and streaming releases (in May and July 2026) seeing many horror fans flock to it.
Until Dawn 2 is a narrative-driven horror game focused on choice and consequences, as in the original Until Dawn, although that’s the main connection. Until Dawn 2 exists in the same universe as the first game, but it moves away from the group of “friends” on Blackwood Mountain to the crew of Dead True on a tropical island. Dead True is a paranormal hunting group where everything is faked and staged until they are forced to encounter real supernatural horrors on said tropical island. This tropical island serves as the stage for Dead True’s first professionally funded episode, with the only real hints toward the supernatural threats right now being that it’s tied to the island’s history.
Anything But Ghosts vs. Until Dawn 2: Two Cakes?
It’s uncertain when Barker’s next horror movie will release, but it’s interesting how similar it (titled Anything But Ghosts) is to a game like Until Dawn. Until Dawn 2 is confirmed to release in 2027, and with principal photography on Anything But Ghosts wrapping in April 2026, the two media releases may come out within spitting distance of each other. That could be a “two cakes” situation for horror fans, especially since it’s two separate forms of entertainment, or it could be that one ends up cannibalizing the other.

Anything But Ghosts is a narrative-driven horror movie set in the same universe as Obsession, establishing a similar relationship to its predecessor as Until Dawn, as well as a story-driven emphasis. The plot follows two fake paranormal investigators who, like Dead True, stage their success, all until they eventually face actual ghosts. It’s uncertain what the Until Dawn 2 characters will face quite yet, but the very basic premise of each plot is similar enough that both warrant interest.
Of course, there’s going to be some differences beyond the obvious (how each horror story will be experienced, with Until Dawn 2 eventually having players and Anything But Ghosts having viewers). Anything But Ghosts focuses on a pair of paranormal investigators, while the Dead True crew has a few folks. The setting for Anything But Ghosts is unknown, but it’s unlikely to share the tropical background of Until Dawn 2.

With the success of Obsession and Until Dawn, of course, the pressure has to be higher than ever.
