Ocarina of Time’s Navi Also Had a Completely Different Design

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time almost gave Navi a completely different appearance, with one of the game’s designers originally envisioning Link’s fairy companion as a human-like girl. The newly resurfaced revelation gives The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time fans an interesting look at how Nintendo 64 hardware limitations ultimately shaped one of the game’s most recognizable characters.

Navi is now almost inseparable from Ocarina of Time, accompanying Link throughout Hyrule, offering hints, and helping players lock onto enemies with the game’s influential Z-targeting system. After almost 30 years, her glowing ball-and-wings design and classic “Hey! Listen!” line are so familiar that it’s hard to imagine her any other way, but Navi wasn’t originally conceived as a major character at all. Designer Yoshiaki Koizumi was initially working on Z-targeting when he decided that simply placing an upside-down triangle over enemies felt too plain for a Zelda game. What eventually became one of the series’ most recognizable companions therefore started life as little more than a prettier targeting cursor.

Zelda: Ocarina of Time Port Brings It to an Unexpected Console

Nearly 30 years after Zelda: Ocarina of Time’s release on Nintendo 64, a port of the game is now available on a surprising platform.

Ocarina of Time Turned a Hardware Limitation Into an Iconic Character

Speaking in a 2011 Iwata Asks interview recently resurfaced by Kit & Krysta, Koizumi revealed that his first idea for Navi looked considerably different. “Usually, if you were to make a fairy, you would make a cute girl,” Koizumi explained, but creating that kind of character wasn’t practical on Nintendo 64 hardware. Instead, he settled on a much simpler, glowing ball of light with wings for the finished game, simply because of the console’s technical limitations. Earlier The Legend of Zelda titles had already depicted fairies with humanoid designs, making the original concept fairly natural for the series, but ultimately not practical. What began as a hardware compromise gave Navi a silhouette far more distinctive than the human-like fairy Koizumi originally imagined.

Navi’s role grew considerably from there. Koizumi said he “didn’t want to use such a simple marker” throughout the game, which led to the fairy concept and the targeting mechanic, originally called the Fairy Navigation System. Script director Toru Osawa eventually suggested shortening “navigation” to Navi, helping turn what began as a gameplay indicator into a full-on character. Ideas eventually emerged to change her colors to show what Link was targeting and to have her deliver hints as a natural way to guide players through the game’s first 3D Zelda adventure. A targeting icon had effectively become a character, and the technical compromise behind her design ultimately became part of Navi’s identity.

Nintendo may now have more than enough hardware power to create the Navi Koizumi initially imagined, but the upcoming Switch 2 remake is wisely leaving her basic appearance alone. The remade Ocarina of Time completely rebuilds the 1998 adventure with overhauled visuals, fully voiced cutscenes, expanded dialogue, orchestral music, new movement options, and modern camera controls when it launches on November 5. Yet Nintendo’s official footage and screenshots still show Navi as the familiar glowing fairy hovering beside Link.

That makes Navi a strong example of how technical limitations can sometimes become a core part of a game’s identity. Nintendo needed a clear way to show which enemy Link was targeting, while Koizumi wanted that solution to feel like it naturally belonged in Hyrule, and the N64 couldn’t comfortably deliver the more elaborate fairy he first envisioned. Almost 30 years later, Nintendo is willing to rebuild much of Ocarina of Time while preserving the design that came out of those limitations. Navi may never have looked the way Koizumi originally wanted, but the glowing ball of light the N64 couldn’t handle as a “cute girl” has become so iconic that it would be impossible to make a proper remake without that original design.
