One of 2022’s Best Indie Games Is Coming to Switch 2

Indie game studio Finji surprised Tunic fans by confirming that the hit adventure game would receive a Nintendo Switch 2 update in the future. The announcement was made on the fourth anniversary of Tunic, though further details about its upcoming Switch 2 release remained elusive as of this writing.

Originally released on PC and Xbox consoles in March 2022, Tunic is a 3D adventure title with an isometric perspective. The game’s playable character is a fox that wears a green tunic and carries a sword and shield. The fox’s outfit is an homage to The Legend of Zelda‘s iconic protagonist, Link. Tunic was inspired by game series like The Legend of Zelda and Dark Souls in its gameplay, as it blended puzzles and exploration with stamina-driven battles. Despite some critique for its rough pacing, Tunic was nominated for several awards and claimed the Artistic Achievement and Debut Game honors at the 2023 BAFTA Games Awards ceremony.

A Switch 2 Launch Title Has Shadow Dropped On Other Platforms

One of the Nintendo Switch 2’s launch titles appears on other platforms and is now available for more gamers to check out.

Tunic is Officially Coming to Switch 2

Given that Tunic is already one of the most successful indie games of the decade so far, as indicated by its 91% positive rating on Steam, Finji shared some news that fans should note down. On the game’s fourth anniversary, Finji posted on social media that Tunic has a Switch 2 update in development, but did not say when this would arrive. Additionally, it was not clearly stated whether the Switch 2 update would arrive as a patch for the Switch version of Tunic or as a separate Nintendo Switch 2 Edition port altogether. It is also unclear if Tunic on Switch 2 will be available for free for users who already have the game on the Switch or if it will be a separate, paid launch on Nintendo’s current-gen console. As of this writing, the Switch version of Tunic, which came out six months after the PC and Xbox ports, is available for $29.99 on the Nintendo eShop.

The Switch version of Tunic is playable on Switch 2 via backward compatibility, though the port has a few caveats for players to consider. Tunic requires 2.9 GB of storage space on Nintendo consoles, and is locked to a stable 30 frames per second (FPS) in both docked and handheld modes. However, the Switch 2 has more power to work with compared to its predecessor. The Switch 2’s hardware has been compared to the Xbox Series S, and it can use Nvidia’s DLSS upscaling technology to increase the performance of supported games. Despite the additional headroom on the Switch 2 console thanks to its upgraded hardware, Tunic currently does not take advantage of it. It is possible that, once updated, Tunic could offer Switch 2 users some perks like an increased frame rate at higher resolutions, or offer Mouse Mode controls via the Joy-Con 2 Controllers. It remains to be seen if that will be the case once Tunic‘s Switch 2 update is available.

Tunic’s Switch 2 Update Joins a Growing List of Ports

With Tunic confirming its Switch 2 plans, the charming indie adventure joins a growing list of titles that have confirmed Switch 2 upgrades of their own. Disney Dreamlight Valley: Nintendo Switch 2 Edition arrives on March 23 as a free update for Switch players who already have the game, and major titles like 007 First Light, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle will arrive on Nintendo’s latest console throughout 2026.

Despite it being out for four years now, Tunic remains one of the best examples of a game that made players think outside the box and get creative about figuring out its mysteries. With a Switch 2 port in development and some questions about its release still lingering, time will tell what perks Tunic will offer to entice players to give its upcoming version a shot.
