Original Creator Criticizes Gears of War: E-Day

After a gameplay demo for the upcoming Gears of War: E-Day was revealed during the Xbox Games Showcase, one of the franchise’s original creators, Cliff Bleszinski, took to Twitter to share his thoughts. While Bleszinski is not involved in the production of Gears of War: E-Day, he previously worked as the lead designer on the first three installments, which gives his comments on the new iteration some extra weight.

Gears of War: E-Day is Officially an Xbox Console Exclusive, Release Date Confirmed

Gears of War: E-Day officially confirms its status as an Xbox console exclusive as well as its release date.

Former Gears of War Lead Designer Shares Thoughts on E-Day

“Those Locust are dying mighty easy, just sayin’,” reads one of Cliff Bleszinski’s recent tweets. His post likely refers to the combat gameplay of Gears of War: E-Day revealed during the Xbox Games Showcase, where Marcus Fenix is seen taking down Locust Drones. To further explain his point, Bleszinski added that when Randy Pitchford played the original Gears of War, he said, “Wow, this is a grinder, eh?” The former game designer also stated, “Locust should have thick skin and armor, and the game feedback loop should evolve to reflect that.”

Replying to his post, some fans suggested that the Drones don’t seem tough in the demo because it is likely being played on easy mode. However, Bleszinski replied that that’s not the point. When another fan pointed out that the enemies in the demo have “zero reaction to bullets,” the game designer responded by saying, “That’s my one big note, to be honest.” In other words, Bleszinski did not seem concerned with how quickly Gears of War: E-Day‘s Locust-type enemies die, but rather with the lack of animation feedback and how they react when taking damage.

Cliff Bleszinski Praised Gears of War: E-Day Too

Aside from the small note about E-Day‘s enemies, Bleszinski had plenty of positive things to say about the upcoming AAA game. “E-Day looks great,” reads another of his tweets. “Amazing feature set, great tech improvements, and, most importantly, looks like it has heart,” he continued. He also praised developer The Coalition, saying, “The longer glimpse of what The Coalition has been up to is exciting.”
