Original Resident Evil 2 Director Hideki Kamiya Comments on Resident Evil Requiem

Clovers director Hideki Kamiya, who directed Resident Evil 2, took to social media to share his thoughts on Resident Evil Requiem. Kamiya recorded his opinions about Resident Evil Requiem in a short video and included some remarks about the game’s scary content and how much one of RE9‘s protagonists, Leon S. Kennedy, has changed since Resident Evil 2.

The post from Kamiya came hours before Capcom shared some major news about Resident Evil Requiem. As one of the highest-rated games of 2026 so far, Resident Evil Requiem has sold over five million units worldwide across all supported platforms. On the morning of March 10, RE9 game director Koshi Nakanishi confirmed on social media that Resident Evil Requiem would receive a story-focused expansion due to the game’s success. However, RE9‘s story expansion will not arrive for some time, as Nakanishi stated that it is in early development as of this writing. Nakanishi also thanked Resident Evil fans for their continued support of the series and for the positive reception to Resident Evil Requiem so far.

Resident Evil Requiem Has a Surprise RE7 Connection That’s Almost Impossible to Find

Resident Evil Requiem includes a blatant reference to Resident Evil 7, but the vast majority of players won’t even know it’s there.

Kamiya Says Leon Kennedy is “No Spring Chicken”

Given that Resident Evil Requiem had sold over five million copies in two weeks, one copy was bought by Clovers, Inc., a studio led by gaming industry veteran Hideki Kamiya. Clovers posted a short video on Twitter that showed some staff members playing through Resident Evil Requiem on PS5. As some of the staff members played through parts of the game, Kamiya remarked about how he was not fond of horror games. Kamiya stated that he preferred the game’s puzzles and combat systems, and said that the Resident Evil series “should make a non-scary mode” for some players. A Clovers staff member stated that a “non-scary” mode in Resident Evil would defeat the purpose of the series, to which Kamiya replied that he does not “need the scary stuff” in the game. Kamiya also remarked about Leon’s grizzled appearance in Resident Evil Requiem. During one of Leon’s gameplay segments, Kamiya jokingly said, “Leon’s no spring chicken anymore, is he?”

Kamiya then followed up by admitting that his comment about Leon’s age also applied to him. Kamiya turned 55 in December 2025. During his time with Capcom, Kamiya directed Resident Evil 2, his first project as a game director. Resident Evil 2, known for telling one of the PS1 era’s best stories, is also the game in which Leon Kennedy made his franchise debut. Following the release of Okami on the PS2 in 2006, Kamiya left Capcom to form PlatinumGames, where he developed titles like the Bayonetta trilogy and The Wonderful 101. Today, Kamiya is the director of Clovers, Inc., named after the former Clover Studio that was closed by Capcom in late 2006.

Kamiya Remains a Constant Social Media Presence

As one of the most recognizable figures in the gaming industry, Kamiya has never been shy about sharing his opinions about various topics on social media. Following the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 console, Kamiya stated that he did not like the directional buttons of the Joy-Con 2. Kamiya added that he preferred it when Nintendo included a D-Pad on its controllers. Although Kamiya’s criticism about the lack of a D-Pad on the Joy-Con 2 is a common gripe among Nintendo fans, that has not stopped the Switch 2 from selling over 17 million units globally since its June 2025 launch.

Currently, Kamiya and Clovers are working with Capcom on a sequel to Okami, though the game still remains in active development. Although most details remained light as of this writing, Capcom stated in early 2025 that the Okami sequel was being developed on the RE Engine, which has been used for Resident Evil Requiem, Monster Hunter Wilds, and Pragmata. As Kamiya and Capcom continue their work on the Okami sequel, time will tell when news about Amaterasu’s return will be shared with fans.
