Blizzard’s Overwatch was well-represented at Blizzcon 2026, with the popular hero-shooter unveiling a brand-new hero and confirming major reworks for Roadhog and Sombra. Overwatch was a massive hit when it first released in 2016, even managing to snag that year’s Game of the Year award. Overwatch has had its ups and downs since then, but it has been enjoying a resurgence in popularity this year with no signs that its momentum is slowing down anytime soon.
This past year has been one of the busiest in Overwatch history. Overwatch has added new heroes at a never-before-seen pace, ensuring that there is always someone new to master in the game. Overwatch players are undoubtedly anxious to see what’s next for the game, and luckily, Blizzard offered a massive preview at Blizzcon 2026.
Overwatch New Hero Doctrine Trailer
As announced by Blizzard, Overwatch‘s next hero is a Support hero named Doctrine. Blizzard revealed Doctrine in an animated short that showed Doomfist, Sombra, and Reaper working together to free Doctrine and recruit him to their cause. Doctrine is equipped with a scepter that heals allies and damages enemies, and he can also rush through battle “shrouded in darkness” while his bat drones heal teammates and speed up their attacks. Since Doctrine is a vampire, he naturally has the ability to take flight as well. Doctrine will be added to the Overwatch hero roster as part of Season 5, but fans don’t have to wait for Season 5 to kick off next month to try him for themselves. Doctrine’s hero trial will go live in Overwatch today.
Besides revealing Doctrine, Blizzard also confirmed that Overwatch Season 5 will see the addition of a new map. Fans can also look forward to major reworks to Roadhog and Sombra, two of the most controversial characters in the history of the game. Roadhog’s abilities will be tweaked so that he can better assist his teammates, and he’s also getting a nerf so that he can’t simply hook and one-hit-kill enemies. Sombra, meanwhile, is getting an even more dramatic rework, and she is being retooled into a Support hero. This is a massive change, to say the least, and it will be exciting to see what exactly it entails.
Blizzard capped off its Overwatch presentation at Blizzcon 2026 by announcing the next Overwatch Spotlight event. The next Overwatch Spotlight will take place in February 2027 and will reveal what’s next for the Overwatch story, as well as reveal a fresh set of heroes and new gameplay systems. Blizzard is going all-out when it comes to new Overwatch content, and that was made clear at Blizzcon.
It was also teased earlier in the show that an Overwatch TV show or movie might one day materialize. Blizzard teased as much when it announced the Diablo animated series coming to Netflix. What form an Overwatch TV show or movie would take remains to be seen, but it’s something fans have been asking to see for years. Hopefully whatever it is lives up to expectations.
