Overwatch just confirmed several heroes will be reworked this year, with Sombra, Lifeweaver, and Roadhog being the first ones on the docket. This is part of a long-term project by Overwatch to keep character kits dynamic and flexible, but not overly complicated or niche.
The year 2026 has been huge for Overwatch so far. It dropped the “2” from its title, introduced five new heroes with a sixth on the way, began its first year-long storyline, and refreshed its UI, breaking Steam player count records in the process. Throughout recent interviews and streams, Overwatch has hinted that several heroes might receive reworks at some point this year.

Overwatch Confirms Multiple Hero Reworks for 2026
Now, Overwatch has officially confirmed this, giving players a soft roadmap along with a list of heroes who will be changed first. In a new Director’s Take blog post, Overwatch Game Director Aaron Keller revealed plans to rework multiple heroes later this year. While he didn’t give an exact number, he did confirm the first three heroes who would be receiving retooled kits: Sombra, Lifeweaver, and Roadhog.
Fans who played during the Overwatch 2 era shouldn’t be too surprised to see these three on this list, as all of them have experienced one or more reworks in the past:

These three heroes have historically struggled in Overwatch due to their kits being overpowered, underpowered, or simply frustrating to deal with. That said, they are just the first of many reworks planned for 2026. Keller confirmed Overwatch is eyeing up heroes with “strongly defined, specific playstyles” or those “whose kits we feel have stagnated in some way” and that “don’t feel as dynamic as their newer counterparts.” The goal with these reworks will be to make these heroes flexible but simple to use, with player choice being a major factor. Fans can likely expect to learn which other Overwatch heroes are getting reworks after Season 3.

While none of these reworks will be implemented in Season 2, plenty of other changes are being made in this update instead. Several must-pick perks are being integrated into base hero kits in Overwatch Season 2, including Mercy’s Flash Heal, Reaper’s Dire Triggers, and Pharah’s Drift Thrusters. Players will be able to use these new base abilities, and check out their replacement perks, once Overwatch Season 2 goes live on April 14.
