Overwatch Never ‘Nerfed Tracer’s Butt,’ Says Jeff Kaplan

Overwatch Never ‘Nerfed Tracer’s Butt,’ Says Jeff Kaplan

In the era of Kiriko and Juno getting the most skins and promo, it barely feels like Tracer, Overwatch’s time-traveling Brit, is still the hero shooter’s mascot, but there was a time when she was the face of the game and was much more present in the lore and promotion. Nowadays, Tracer has faded into the background a bit, but she had plenty of facetime and even a little bit of controversy in the early days of Overwatch, such as when Blizzard patched out a victory pose that highlighted her ass in her very tight pants.

It’s been over a decade since that hoopla, but fans still remember when Blizzard “nerfed” Tracer’s butt. Or at least, they think they do. It seems like a bit of a Mandela Effect has followed the situation, because fans think Blizzard actually removed some junk from Tracer’s trunk at some point. Jeff Kaplan, Overwatch’s original game director, is no longer at Blizzard and is promoting his upcoming western survival game The Legend of California, and during a stream, a fan asked why the team “nerfed Tracer’s butt,” to which Kaplan says this never happened.

“We actually didn’t nerf Tracer’s butt,” Kaplan said. “It stayed exactly the same.”

The internet loves to play a game of telephone and rewrite history, or just parrot memes without actually looking into something. Tracer’s very visible butt line has remained a staple part of her look across her Overwatch 2 redesign and several of her skins. She just, uh, displays it in a different way when she wins a match.

Overwatch is getting ready to release its 51st hero, Sierra, who will join the roster next week on April 14 when season 2 begins. The new season will also include an update to Anran’s design to make her look more distinct from characters like Juno and Kiriko, though fans seem split on whether or not Blizzard actually went far enough.
