Overwatch Season 2 Making Big Change to Map Voting

Overwatch Season 2 Making Big Change to Map Voting

Overwatch is making some improvements to the Map Voting system in Season 2, including new and reworked map forgiveness in Competitive, majority rules voting, and a random vote option. These are just some of the improvements Overwatch is making to its base systems as part of its relaunch in 2026.

In 2026, Blizzard took some big swings with its hero shooter, including a rebranding back to calling it simply Overwatch, a refreshed UI, and 10 new heroes released throughout the year-long Reign of Talon storyline. The risk paid off, with Overwatch’s comeback breaking records on Steam, Twitch, and other platforms.

Overwatch Season 2 Map Voting Changes Explained

Now, Overwatch is getting ready to roll out its second season, and with it, some major improvements are coming to the Map Voting system. Introduced in a Director’s Take blog by Overwatch Game Director Aaron Keller, these upgrades to the Map Voting system will arrive in Reign of Talon Season 2 on April 14.

  • Losing games on new or reworked maps in Competitive will result in a smaller penalty to rank progress.
  • If an overwhelming majority of players vote for a map, that map will automatically win the vote.
  • A “Random Map” button gives gamers the chance to vote for a randomly-selected map besides the three offered.
  • Icons on each map card will show whether a team is playing Attack or Defense.
  • Back-end map recency adjustments to make maps that receive some votes not as buried as ones that receive none, meaning a player’s favorite maps show up more often.

While all of these changes are beneficial for fans, the new and reworked map forgiveness in Competitive is especially timely. Every season during Reign of Talon is supposed to have at least one new or reworked map. With updates to Antarctic Peninsula in Season 2, Japan Night planned for Overwatch Season 3, and Iceland and Atlantic Arcology at some point after, this feature in particular will get a lot of use.

Social System and Hero Ban Improvements Coming to Overwatch in 2026

The Overwatch Director’s Take blog introduced some social system improvements as well. For starters, the Post-Match Accolades system is replacing the existing Endorsements in Season 2. After a match, fans will be taken to a 3D landing page to vote for an MVP from either team and can even engage in post-game banter in voice chat with the other team. This new system is reminiscent of the popular voting cards from before the Overwatch 2 era and should provide gamers with more opportunities to be recognized for big plays.

Some upgrades are coming to the Hero Ban system in Overwatch, too. Though nothing is set in stone, Blizzard is looking into ways to expand hero preference information sharing during the voting phase and is even considering a fifth Lobby Ban slot, chosen via votes from both teams and independent of role limits. These changes are early in development, will likely arrive much later in 2026, and are subject to change, but fans can expect the Hero Bans system for Competitive Play to receive improvements at some point this year.
