Today at Blizzcon’s opening ceremonies, Blizzard unveiled Overwatch‘s next hero, a “vampire-inspired” support character named Doctrine.
The Overwatch segment included an animated cinematic introducing Act 3 of the current story and showing off Doomfist, Sombra, Widowmaker, and Reaper on a mission together to free Doctrine from a prison cell. Doctrine reveals shadowy, bat-like powers and goes from looking like a corpse guy into a slick futuristic Victorian nightwalker-kinda-guy.
Doctrine has a scepter that can heal teammates and sends out drones (mechanical bats!) with which to attack. His signature ability is Infuse, which transforms his next ability, such as a dash turning into flight.
In addition to the reveal of Doctrine, we also learned about a new map: Watch Camp: Grimvotn, which is an escort map set in an Icelandic prison camp.
We also learned about some changes coming to Overwatch soon: there’s going to be a major work of current pain-in-the-neck Roadhog to turn him into a tank people might actually want around. Sombra is also being reworked as a support character. Both of them will be playable on the Blizzcon show floor alongside the new map, while Doctrine will be available for players at home for a limited time trial. And finally, Dokiwatch cosmetics are also coming back to the game.
The actual launch of all these updates is coming in October, and don’t forget, there’s still one more hero left for release this year that we haven’t seen yet.
