PC gamers are currently able to claim and download a 2024 horror game typically worth $15 completely free of charge until May 16. At such a standard price point, it should surprise no one that this is an indie horror game, but that’s an area where indies definitely excel. More experimentation goes into indie horror games than bigger ones, and where this one stands out is its retro-futuristic sci-fi elements.
To download this horror game for free, PC users are going to need the Epic Games Store. That said, this title should not be confused with the typical Epic Games Store free games. Those include the choice-based narrative game The Telltale Batman: Shadows Edition and the co-op turn-based tactical RPG Sunderfolk, which will be available from May 14 until May 21.
Steam’s Free-to-Keep Promotion Has 6 Upcoming 100% Free Games
The backend of Steam’s Free-to-Keep Promotion reveals six games that will be made available for free in the coming weeks/months.
Claim Lost in the Hole Without Paying a Dime
The game in question is Lost in the Hole, developed by Horizon Studios, and players who download it for free before 4 pm PT/7 pm ET on May 16 can keep it forever. In it, players travel back to the 1970s but find themselves in an advanced scientific lab that creates a unique retro-futuristic, yet grounded, sci-fi horror experience. A biological experiment in said lab has gone wrong, and the player is tasked with delving into its depths to obtain a key sample related to the outbreak. In doing so, players will deal with traps, mutants, and their own fear. The developer describes the atmosphere as dark and tense, with skill, quick decisions, and courage all required to play the game.

Lost in the Hole isn’t going to be a horror game that’s for everyone, but at the cost of free, it’s absolutely worth checking out. $15 isn’t much, but perhaps somewhere in the world, that’s lunch. So it’s hard to ignore for anyone looking for a new horror game to play. The only good news is that it’s not the only free game promotion happening right now.
There Are More PC Games Available for Free Right Now
If Lost in the Hole doesn’t seem like the game you want to play right now, 5 noteworthy PC games can be claimed and/or played 100% free as of this writing. The TellTale Batman game and Sunderfolk, the aforementioned Epic Games Store free game giveaway, are among the biggest available and can be claimed via EGS until 8 am PT/11 am ET on May 21. PC users have a week to claim them, as of this writing.
Similar to Lost in the Hole, Devil’s Island is another game currently being given away for free on EGS with no attention paid to the traditional free game line-up. Devil’s Island is an open-world survival game where players investigate the source of the apocalypse on an island, exploring a story that combines religion, aliens, and more into something that’s pretty unique. It’s also available until May 16, but expires much earlier in the day, at 3:11 AM PT/6:11 AM ET to be precise. Over on IndieGala, PC users can also download The Brave Little Cloud, an action performer designed mostly for kids, for a limited time (that is currently unknown).
Finally, Steam is hosting a Free Weekend for GreedFall: The Dying World, the prequel to the original and last game to come out of Spiders before its liquidation. Steam users have until May 17 at 10 am PT/1 pm ET to download and play the game, but unlike the others here, access ends at that time. Anyone who wants to play it for free should prioritize it over others here, but the good news is that anyone who wants to keep it can purchase it at a 30% discount until May 27, too.
