PC gamers have a limited time to claim a 100% DRM-Free version of a 2D platformer completely free of charge. Unfortunately, unlike some giveaways such as Steam’s Free-to-Keep promotion, there is no specific timeframe on this free game giveaway. That’s typically how a free game giveaway on IndieGala works at least.

For the uninitiated, IndieGala is a digital storefront similar to Humble Bundle or Fanatical. Each website is a great way to snag PC games on the cheap, if not absolutely free sometimes. IndieGala has been around since 2011, offering indie game bundles and discounted keys, but it also does DRM-free game giveaways. In the past, IndieGala has given away games like Die Young and Game Club Waka Waka.

Carlos the Taco is a bite-sized indie platformer that knows exactly what it is and doesn’t pretend to be anything more. Developed by Victoria Games, it’s a colorful, hand-drawn 2D platformer where players step into the shoes of a taco. Said taco is on a mission to rescue his kidnapped wife after a Wedding Day disaster, with the game leaning into the absurd storytelling and exaggerated humor implied by such a statement.

Carlos comes equipped with powers over elements like fire, ice, and earth in order to defeat his foes with classic platformer gameplay. In many ways, it’s a straightforward throwback to classic platformers with tight levels, simple controls, and a short 1-2 hour runtime. That might put some folks off, but it’s worth highlighting how this free PC game is typically a cheap PC game, and the second best thing to free is cheap.

Over on Steam, Carlos the Taco holds a “Positive” rating after 93% of reviews praised the game. It could be higher, but unfortunately, the volume of reviews on Steam is low. With that in mind, it seems players tend to enjoy its art style, lighthearted tone, and its classic platformer gameplay, especially paired with its standard price point, with some critiquing its short length and basic mechanics. In other words, it might be perfect for someone looking for a fun game to beat in one sitting.

By most accounts, Carlos the Taco is exactly what it aims to be: a quick, polished, and ridiculous platforming game experience. IndieGala’s free game giveaway only lowers the barrier further. In the worst case, it’s a short curiosity you uninstall after an hour; in the best case, it’s a charming indie gem for PC you’re glad you didn’t overlook. Either way, it’s hard to argue with the price point (well, the lack thereof) here.
