Phantom Blade Zero is rapidly approaching its release date, though one question many fans have had is whether the game would get an actual physical release alongside its planned digital launch. Positioning itself as a KungFuPunk-style experience, Phantom Blade Zero definitely turned a lot of heads when it revealed Donnie Yen is not only involved in the game, but is performing as a major character in the story as well.

It’s been a lengthy road for developer S-Game and its highly anticipated action game, Phantom Blade Zero. For fans, that wait slightly deepened earlier this year when it was announced that Phantom Blade Zero was hit with a delay, moving out of its original early September date and into the last week in October. Game director Liang “Soulframe” Qiwei indicated the extra time would allow for extra polish, identifying one last opportunity for “another meaningful leap forward.” Either way, the lengthy wait is nearly at an end, with Phantom Blade Zero now only a week away from launch.

Phantom Blade Zero Confirms Physical Launch

One of the biggest remaining questions regarding Phantom Blade Zero has finally gotten an official answer, and while it may not be what fans want, at least a physical edition will be coming. Towards the end of the launch trailer for Phantom Blade Zero, the developer thanks fans for their continued support in helping the game get where it is. Following that is the reveal of a PS5 physical edition of the game, though the catch here is that it won’t be available until 2027. Unfortunately, there wasn’t more information or a specific window for when fans can expect to see it.

The image also teases 3 different physical versions of Phantom Blade Zero. Alongside the base Standard Edition, fans will also have a Deluxe Edition and Ultimate Edition to pick from. Unfortunately, there were no pricing details or what’s available in the Ultimate Edition, which currently doesn’t exist on the digital storefronts on PlayStation, Steam, or Epic. It’s fair to assume that the Phantom Blade Zero Digital Deluxe Edition matches the current one for sale, which includes the Digital Artbook and Soundtrack, as well as other in-game goodies.

One of the big catches was the uncertainty surrounding the physical release of Phantom Blade Zero. While S-Game initially remained silent on the topic, fans seemingly discovered that a physical release wasn’t in the cards, at least at launch. A user named 2 Old 4 Gaming posted an interaction they had with the retail chain Play Asia, revealing a message that it had been informed that there won’t be a physical edition available and that the listing had been updated to remove that line. Many still had hope that one would eventually arrive, but at least during launch, fans would have to settle for a digital-only copy.

For many, physical editions of games have become even more important after Sony announced plans to end physical games by January 2028 and other big AAA games like GTA 6 only including a download code within the game box. Naturally, there has been a strong debate about digital ownership and what that could look like if a major publisher like Sony fully goes digital for its next console. Naturally, there’s been plenty of backlash towards the shift towards an all-digital future, though rumors indicate that Microsoft and its Xbox brand could go in the opposite direction, perhaps to appeal to those who feel burned by Sony.
