Players Keep Finding Veronica Easter Eggs In Resident Evil Requiem

Players Keep Finding Veronica Easter Eggs In Resident Evil Requiem

Rumors of a Resident Evil – Code: Veronica remake started swirling even before the release of Resident Evil Requiem, but now that players have had some time to explore its world, they’re finding some intriguing in-game Easter eggs that could add credence to the rumors. A post in the Gaming Leaks and Rumours subreddit highlights two of these hints. In one, there is a label on a wine bottle that reads “Avernico,” an anagram of Veronica. In the other, a guest named Veronica appears in the registry at the Wrenwood Hotel.

In the bar lounge in Rhodes Hill there’s this suspicious bottle, AVERNICO. if you unscramble this word it spells out… VERONICA. i wonder what’s next for Resident Evil 😄 pic.twitter.com/DsIwC4nYez

Thanks to photo mode, Wrenwood’s “hotel register” can be read more clearly, revealing Alyssa wasn’t only the last guest, but also the “9th”, which matches the title’s number. Also, one guest’s name is “Veronica”, which adds up to the list of “references” to CV in RE9. #REBHFun pic.twitter.com/r0bI00EuCX

Another viral post on X shows a series of wooden toy blocks in Resident Evil Requiem that read “C,” “N” (or “Z” on its side), “1,” and “6” or “9.” Players are theorizing that these are references to Code: Veronica, Resident Evil Zero, the original Resident Evil, often referred to as RE1, and either Resident Evil 6 or Requiem itself, which is the ninth mainline game in the series. Fans are speculating that Code: Veronica, RE0, RE1, and possibly RE6 are the next games in line for remakes.

Reading so much into a few toy blocks definitely veers into tin-foil hat territory, but, as the Reddit post points out, Capcom does have a habit of hiding references to future games in Resident Evil releases. A thread on X lays out the evidence:

(1/6) You know what, let me show you what I mean about how Resident Evil games in the RE Engine era often have little hints to what they’re cooking up at the time.

In RE7, there’s two hints. The first is the old woman/Mother Miranda painting in Lucas’ “Happy Birthday” puzzle. https://t.co/yuIm7y20gP pic.twitter.com/V10gqGTn5o

(3/6) In Resident Evil Village, on Karl Heisenberg’s conspiracy wall in his factory, there’s a picture of an early version of Dr. Victor Gideon, obviously now we know the main villain of Resident Evil Requiem, hung up on the wall. pic.twitter.com/2DTrHz6tQY

(5/6) Sometimes Capcom’s very directly cheeky, like in the “10 Million Sales” video for Resident Evil: 4 Remake, they updated the sign in the Village to form a “IX” while framing Leon in shot, with the lyrics blaring, “ON THE ROAD AHEAD” as it pops up.

That one was blantant. pic.twitter.com/0V4mKXkGsT

(7/8) Which speaking of that, Leon’s license plate in RE9 isn’t a reference to a future project. 9642 is all the main games Leon starred in, and ND is an abbreviation for Requiem’s codename in development, “New Dawn”. pic.twitter.com/ml5pQOkhna

However, as other Redditors pointed out, the name “Veronica Galibardi” in the hotel registry is likely a reference to a real person who did the Italian localization for Resident Evil Requiem. The other names in the hotel registry also line up with more real people who worked on the game’s localization. The registry Easter egg seems pretty firmly debunked, and the toy blocks feel like a bit of a stretch, too, but the wine bottle is still pretty intriguing. It could just be a simple reference without any deeper meaning but, given that at least three different sources have shared rumors of a Code: Veronica remake, the fanbase is primed to latch onto any new evidence they find.

Capcom has been on a Resident Evil remake kick over the last half-decade or so, releasing the Resident Evil 2 remake in 2019, Resident Evil 3 remake in 2020, and Resident Evil 4 remake in 2023. Combined with the HD remaster of Resident Evil in 2015, that makes Code: Veronica the oldest mainline game in the series that hasn’t been remade or at least significantly updated. It would make sense for Code: Veronica to be next in line for a remake, even if the evidence is still pretty specious.
