Sony may have secured exclusive marketing rights for Grand Theft Auto 6, according to some recently surfaced promotional messaging that the company has been directing at PlayStation users. The possibility seems all the greater considering this is neither the first nor the second indicator that GTA 6 is getting a special marketing push from the PlayStation maker.
From the moment Rockstar released its earlier-than-expected GTA 6 reveal trailer in December 2023, the company was clear about its platform strategy: current-gen consoles only. The game will not even come to PC at launch, with the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S the only systems set to have it on day one.
It’s Officially Time to Start Worrying About Grand Theft Auto 6’s Release Date
Grand Theft Auto 6 has now entered its final pre-release stretch where continued radio silence from Rockstar can still be viewed as normal.
Sony Reportedly Prompting PS4 Owners to Upgrade to the PS5 in Time for GTA 6
Sony is now understood to be reminding some PS4 owners who have not yet upgraded to the PS5 that they will need to do so if they want to play GTA 6. Starting in early May 2026, multiple owners of the company’s last-generation console have reported receiving a marketing email prompting them to buy the PS5. The screenshots attached to some of those testimonials suggest Sony may have selected the group by targeting users who are still on the PS4 and have wishlisted GTA 6 on the PlayStation Store. Whether that is the only condition for receiving the email, which has so far been spotted in English, French, and Spanish, is unclear. Regardless, the sole fact that Sony is using GTA 6 to market its gaming hardware indicates that it has struck some kind of marketing deal with Rockstar centered on its upcoming open-world game.
GTA 6 Trailer 2 Already Hinted at PlayStation Marketing Deal
The recent wave of PS5 upgrade pitches is not the first indication that Sony and Rockstar have partnered to promote the latter’s next AAA project. The second GTA 6 trailer, which turned one on May 6, included a “Captured on PS5” notice visible beginning around the 2:42 mark. Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Rockstar parent company Take-Two Interactive, also recently hinted that the publisher may have granted exclusive GTA 6 marketing rights to Sony Group. His remarks, shared during the Las Vegas-based Interactive Innovation Conference in late April 2026, did not clarify the nature of the deal, nor did they outright confirm it even exists.
PlayStation Store Deals Page Is Suspiciously Empty Right Now
With GTA 6 just over six months from release, many fans and industry watchers expect Rockstar to share gameplay footage and edition details soon, possibly to mark the start of the game’s pre-order period. That expectation has taken on new significance because the PlayStation Store’s deals page is currently empty, not accounting for PS Plus-exclusive discounts, with a notice stating that the platform’s next major sale will begin on May 13. While the upcoming event is a big one, being one of Sony’s Next Level Savings sales, this is still the first time in years that the PS Store deals page is not actively promoting anything beyond minor PS Plus benefits. Combined with the rumors that the company has secured GTA 6 marketing rights, the empty deals page has led some fans to speculate that a major announcement could arrive in the May 11-12 window, with Sony clearing its high-traffic PS Store promotions page to maximize attention around it.
GTA 6 is currently targeting a November 19 release. It remains unclear whether the game’s online component will launch on the same date or follow a few weeks later, as was the case with GTA Online in 2013.
