PlayStation is 30 Now and Sony is Celebrating in an Unexpected Way

PlayStation is 30 Now and Sony is Celebrating in an Unexpected Way

PlayStation has officially been around for three decades, bringing a wide range of video game franchises, consoles, and peripherals to its fans over the last 30 years. However, instead of honoring this special anniversary through the expected methods, PlayStation is instead offering a surprising limited edition item for lifelong PlayStation fans: a celebratory wristwatch.

Typically, PlayStation and other companies celebrate their anniversaries through items gamers can get some proper use out of. PlayStation’s 30th anniversary loot, for instance, brought the following items for gamers to collect:

  • A limited edition PS5 console themed around the PS1

    • A PS5 Pro console with a similar PS1 theme.
  • A matching DualSense PS1 controller.

    • A DualSense Edge variant of the same design.
  • A PS1-themed PlayStation Portal.
  • A 30th anniversary photo book.
  • A PS1-themed pair of sneakers.

With the console and controller being extremely sought after and selling out quickly, players might have been hoping for some more matching items to wrap up the 30th anniversary year, like a PS1-themed Pulse headset, or even a proper restock of the collection. Instead, though, they’re going to have to settle for a special watch. There will only be 300 of these watches released, with the numbering of each watch marked on a special memory card, a clever detail that immediately sets the tone for how detailed this collector’s item is.

PlayStation’s 30th Anniversary Watch is Stunning, But It’s Going to Cost Gamers a Pretty Penny

The watch in question is admittedly gorgeous, as it’s the product of a collaboration with renowned watchmaker Anicorn. This brand name will see it costing players a high sum, though, as anyone who wants a watch of their own will have to cough up $780 USD — more than PSVR 2, a brand-new PS5, or the aforementioned 25th anniversary bundle from a few years back. The design features the number 30 on the back of the watch to symbolize the anniversary it was created for, the four colored action buttons in place of the clock numbers, and the PlayStation logo in the center. The wristband is covered in small sacred symbols, while the watch hands are actually the start and select buttons that fans of the old DualShock controllers will remember fondly. The coloring of the watch matches that of the PS1 console, bringing the design home with another clever touch.

According to Esquire, this watch is the first of its kind, as Sony has never offered its PlayStation branding to a traditional watch prior to this point, restricting it to the company’s own merch and tech only.

Oddly enough, this watch will not actually be wearable until the 30th anniversary has come and gone, as though pre-orders begin next week, the watches will not be delivered until June 2026. As for why Sony didn’t go all-in for this particular milestone, there are a few potential reasons. The first is that the company may have seen new 30th anniversary bundles as being too close to its 25th anniversary loot, asking too much from players. Alternatively, there is the fact that this is only PlayStation 1’s 30th anniversary year in Europe and North America; it released in Japan in 1994, making this PlayStation’s 31st year of existence in reality.

Regardless, while this unexpected collab won’t be for everyone, watch collectors will undoubtedly be delighted by this rare PlayStation item. It’s certainly a looker, but fans will have to decide for themselves if they’d be willing to spend more than a console on this shiny new accessory.
