PlayStation Just Handed Xbox a Win at a Very Awkward Time

Sony hasn’t exactly been having a great gaming year, what with active development ending for Destiny 2, a decision to focus on digital games going into the next generation, and a push for live-service games that are struggling to stick the landing. And it seems that the train of bad news isn’t slowing down any time soon for PlayStation, as it was just announced that Kojima’s hotly anticipated espionage title, Physint, has been dropped and is now going to be published by Xbox, which puts even more pressure on the blue team as we head into the future.

The dominance of PlayStation in the console market has continued for the last decade or so, and over the past few years, it felt as though Xbox was never going to be able to claw back some of the player base it previously held. However, if we keep seeing poor decisions, questionable moves, and anti-consumer practices, then PlayStation’s position may very well be under pressure, especially as we near the end of this console generation where they had felt untouchable for the longest time. It will take a lot for Xbox to reclaim the throne, but I can definitely see a world where a few more stumbles could put PlayStation in a dicey situation in the lead-up to the PS6’s launch.

PlayStation Drops Kojima’s Next Game, and Xbox Is Stepping In

Amid PlayStation’s surprising announcement, Hideo Kojima shares a new statement clarifying the future of his next game and his partnership with Xbox.

PlayStation Is Rapidly Losing Ground To Xbox

The gaming industry as a whole has had its fair share of troubles in recent times, but many of the negatives have been offset by a few talented individuals who continue to push the boundaries of the medium. One of the most respected figures in the space, Hideo Kojima, had become a real asset for PlayStation, giving them the Death Stranding series that was met with critical acclaim across the globe. And beyond that, a new project titled Physint was in the works as an exclusive for the platform, but it is now known that the game was on the verge of being axed due to numerous reasons, such as sales concerns from Death Stranding 2 (via Tech4Gamers), and it has found a new home on the other side of the fence with Xbox.

This single decision in isolation doesn’t seem that crazy, as it wouldn’t be the first project to be pushed aside by a publisher, yet in the context of the rest of PlayStation’s recent shortcomings, it feels like a much bigger domino that may very well lead to some serious issues down the line. It’s no secret that PlayStation isn’t exactly everyone’s favorite company right now, what with the decision to end physical production in 2028 and the controversial move to cancel future development on Destiny 2, and when you start to dig even deeper, the problems start to stack up quite high and have been developing for more than just the last few months.

If we keep seeing poor decisions, questionable moves, and anti-consumer practices, then PlayStation’s position may very well be under pressure

For starters, we have to talk about PlayStation’s relationship with live-service games, as while Destiny may be the most recent name on the chopping block, their track record is far from clean. You had a Last of Us multiplayer game that was canceled very close to the end of development, a God of War live-service game developed by Bluepoint, a studio which was also just shut down by PlayStation, and perhaps their biggest blunder, Concord, a game that was expected to be the future of the platform that set them back upwards of $400 million.

The list goes on and on, and even if you try to overlook the live-service focus and the controversial hardware changes, it seems as though the cracks are starting to show themselves everywhere, specifically, in PlayStation’s exclusive games. There was a lot of hype and build-up to the release of Insomniac’s Wolverine, and although it is far from a complete failure, judging by the reviews and reception from the players, I think that people expected more. So, if you see PlayStation spending all this money, time, and energy developing and marketing an exclusive as the next big thing, and it launches as a fairly average game, you start to wonder if it is even worth continuing to support the platform down the line or if Team Green is worth a look.

The Next Console Generation Means Everything for Xbox

It has been six years since the Xbox Series X/S dropped, and in that time, the devices have struggled to find homes due to the rampant popularity of the PS5. However, console generations move pretty quickly, and it won’t be long before we get to see what’s next in the hardware department, with the PS6 and the infamous Project Helix expected to release before the end of the decade. So if you’re an Xbox right now, and you see PlayStation losing goodwill and floundering with their exclusive titles, as well as axing one of the most respected creators in the entire industry, then it makes perfect sense to capitalize on the slump and kickstart the next generation with a bang.

Xbox has already taken some pretty major strides in terms of consumer appeal, most notably with the push for greater Game Pass value by adding day-one exclusives and countless other standout titles. But even outside of their stellar subscription service, it is hard not to look at their upcoming slate and be at least a little bit excited. There’s the long-awaited return of Gears of War, several Bethesda games in the works like The Elder Scrolls 6, and some brand-new IPs such as Clockwork Revolution that all put together make for an attractive lineup for players to get excited about.

Also, to fight back against PlayStation’s future no-disc policy, they have announced the Disc to Digital feature, which allows you to insert your existing physical games and claim a digital license for them. While it is unclear right now whether the next Xbox will have a disc drive or not at launch, what this feature does mean is that any discs you buy today will likely be playable on the next generation, and if their backwards compatibility focus continues, then it means your existing library is going to remain relevant for years to come. In the whole grand scheme of things, it isn’t a huge step, but much like PlayStation’s consistent slip-ups, enough wins or positives like this for Xbox could give consumers a big enough reason to switch sides.

In fairness to PlayStation, Xbox has also had its fair share of internal issues. The mass studio acquisitions and the goal of trying to be everything at once have now backfired, and a series of lay-offs and restructures have brought plenty of bad press for the company. Yet I would still argue there is something to be said about a publisher that is willing to pick up and assist so many different developers, and even if things go wrong, they were at least open to giving it a try. As we look to the future, it is clear that gaming is about to undergo some major changes at all tiers of the ladder, and as the competition gets bigger and the race to the top accelerates, only time will tell if Xbox can finally get the better of PlayStation.
