The summer of game announcements is officially behind us, and it is time to turn our attention to autumn, where we may see some of the biggest games over the next year or so. In the case of PlayStation, they like to keep their big reveals and first-party titles safely tucked behind their State of Play events, and while it is still a rumor at this point, we may be seeing one at the start of September, according to long-time leaker Nash Weedle. Grain of salt aside, it is interesting to think about the kinds of games we may see at the next PlayStation event, especially with how much star power they have on the back burner and the number of announcements that are going to be hitting consoles any day now.
Just in the last year, we have had reveals for God of War, Control Resonant, Phantom Blade Zero, and so many more incredible-looking games, but that doesn’t mean the tank has run out of steam completely. We are still very much in the dark in terms of some of Sony’s bigger projects, like the next Naughty Dog games and other prestigious studios, like Guerrilla Games, and considering how long it has been since our last check-in, I would argue it is time for the devs to take the stage and give us what we have all been waiting for. Aside from the big names, we can expect to see a couple of upcoming titles that are entering the market this fall, from Rayman Legends Retold to Phantom Blade Zero, and anything more than that would be an absolute treat for fans of all things PlayStation.
September 2026’s Potential State Of Play Has A Lot Of Potential
Let’s start with the obvious. From September onwards, we already have a concrete image of the remainder of the 2026 PS5 lineup, so the assumption is that the event will still be mostly headlined by Marvel’s Wolverine, Phantom Blade Zero, and likely, Grand Theft Auto 6. The first one being a PlayStation exclusive means that a lot of the marketing and attention is going to be heading in that direction, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be room for a few other extended previews. If I had to put my money on it, I would strongly expect Control Resonant to show up, as well as Rayman Legends Retold, as while they might not be headliners for the PS5, they are still important games that are going to pad out the catalog nicely.
Put the consoles in the correct order.
Now, if we get out more speculative caps on, it is worth reminding ourselves about what games PlayStation has already shown. While it has been a little under two years since we last saw it, I think it is a good chance for another peep at Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. Naughty Dog has made a name for themselves as one of the big singleplayer studios, but their timeline has been pretty quiet, aside from a few remakes and re-releases of their biggest IPs. There is word that the game may be targeting a much later release date like 2028, yet I find it hard to believe that we will be waiting this long for even a small amount of additional information or marketing.

Then there are the other big PlayStation IPs, notably Horizon and God of War. The former hasn’t had a mainline release since 2022, and although we may see a bit more gameplay from Horizon: Hunter’s Gathering, it would still be great to know that Aloy is almost ready for another adventure. For Kratos and the gang, we have been given a lot of information regarding the future of the franchise, with Laufey dropping next year, and several other projects steadily moving along the path to release. Among them are the remakes of the original trilogy, and the elusive God of War 6, and as much as I would love to see the axe-wielding menace grace our screens in September, other than some more info on the three-piece, it is fair to rule out any competition with God of War: Laufey.

Turning away from PlayStation franchises, there are a couple of other big games out there that Sony are still keen to push out before the end of the year. At the end of September, we are getting the next standalone Silent Hill game in Townfall, a debut first-person experience for the series that should introduce us to plenty of new horrors lurking in the mist. As it is scheduled to drop only a few weeks after the State of Play, it makes sense for there to at least be a mention during the event. Then there’s Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve, a game on the complete other end of the spectrum that brings with it high-octane aerial dogfights and a solid story that should impress both longtime fans and newcomers at the same time.

Next, there are a couple of other bigger projects that have been shown off quite a bit and would slot in perfectly alongside the premier IPs mentioned before. Turok Origins is the most likely candidate, which is still lacking a date, but it remains on the PS5 site for upcoming games anyway, meaning that although a delay may be on the radar, it still has a decent chance of making it out by the end of 2026. Staying with shooters, we have 4:LOOP, the ex-Left 4 Dead developers’ next co-op game that is in the closed beta stages and primed for a wider access launch in the coming months, meaning that while a full-blown launch might be a bit farfetched, I can easily see an open beta dropping in the next State of Play, especially given how prevalent it was at the last one.
Finally, we can go full conspiratorial mode and consider the longshots that still have a fair chance of appearing at an event sometime soon. Until Dawn 2 is another exclusive that was shown this summer, and with a 2027 date already lined up, I imagine an actual month or even a day could be ironed out fairly quickly, judging by how complete the cutscenes and visuals of the trailer looked. And if we really want to tug at some slender strings, then there is a minute chance of some extra Marvel logos popping up, as we already know about Rise of Hydra, Iron Man, Blade, and the next Spider-Man game from rumors and announcements, and thus, it would be cool to see the future of the extended universe be set up alongside the launch of Wolverine.
The last leap I can make is toward the other Naughty Dog game that is rumored to be in the works, something that could either be brand new or come from an existing franchise, but again, I would say that while the chance is above 0%, there is no ground to get hyped just yet. But if we even see a few of these less obvious games at the event, then PlayStation is going to become a major force throughout the end of the year and at the start of the next.
