Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen on Switch Include Legendary and Mythical Event Pokemon

Many fans were curious about how Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen would operate differently on Nintendo Switch, especially when it comes to event-specific Pokemon, and now there’s an answer. For the most part, Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen are just ports of the original games on the new console, but it has does come with modern support.

For example, the Pokemon Presents also confirmed that Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen would receive Home support, albeit at a later date. This news, alongside a lot of other key information, was released alongside the confirmation of Pokemon Winds and Waves as the Gen 10 games. But with those coming in 2027, Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen represent the past and present.

Every Pokemon Officially Confirmed for Winds and Waves So Far

Pokemon Winds and Waves’ official reveal is finally here, and the trailer confirms several returning Pokemon for Gen 10 as well as the new starters.

Several legendary and mythical Pokemon in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen are tied to key events, which could only be obtained through limited-distribution key items. Some were more severe than others, with Celebi in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen basically being non-existent outside of Japan. But now Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen automatically include some key items to obtain popular legendary and mythical Pokemon—Ho-oh, Lugia, and Deoxys.

As reported and reaffirmed by known Pokemon community accounts Centro Leaks and Pory Leeks, Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen players will automatically receive the Aurora- and MysticTickets upon beating the Elite Four and entering the Hall of Fame. As of this writing, the fates of Mew and Celebi are a little less certain.

How to Catch Deoxys, Lugia, and Ho-Oh in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen

  • Beat Elite Four and Obtain Tickets
  • Use the AuroraTicket at the Seagallop at Vermillion City/the Sevii Islands to travel to Birth Island

    • Solve the Triangle puzzle and battle Deoxys to capture it.
    • Deoxys’ Attack Forme is exclusive to FireRed.
    • Deoxys’ Defense Forme is exclusive to LeafGreen
  • Use the Mystic Ticket at the Seagallop at Vermillion City/the Sevii Islands to travel to Navel Rock

    • Travel downward B14F to battle and catch Lugia
    • Travel upward to 4F to battle and catch Ho-Oh

What About Mew and Celebi in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen?

While it’s exciting to get the two Gen 2 legendaries and Deoxys in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen, there is no known information currently about Mew and Celebi. Pre-release information for Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen said they included all 151 original Pokemon (meaning Mew too), but it’s not yet known how accurate that is.

Nothing about other Gen 3 Pokemon game ports to Switch has been confirmed by Game Freak at this time, and to acquire Mew, players need Pokemon Emerald. The required event item (Old Sea Chart) was only distributed for Emerald, so fans had to catch Mew on Faraway Island there and trade it to Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen. Something could have been added for Mew too, in theory.

Celebi seems even more unlikely. Celebi’s distributions for Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen were so localized and so rare that less than 1% of players legitimately had it during the generation’s heyday. Perhaps that changes, but for now, fans have the world of Kanto and the Sevii Islands to return to.
